chapter thirty four

The morning light filtered through the windows as I made my way to Paws and Whiskers, my heart filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension.

I was eager to check on Wonwon, my little kitten who had been given the name in honor of Jungwon.

As I approached the clinic, I noticed the familiar sign and took a deep breath, mentally preparing for whatever awaited me inside.

The moment I stepped through the door, I was greeted by the warm and inviting sight of Jangmi. Today, she looked particularly stylish in a white polo shirt with puffed sleeves and blue jeans that complemented her practical yet chic appearance.

Her welcoming smile was a breath of fresh air.

“Hi, Jillian!” Jangmi greeted me cheerfully. “Wonwon’s awake and doing much better today. Let’s go see him!”

I couldn’t contain my excitement and followed her through the clinic’s hallways. Jangmi’s positivity was infectious, and I felt a surge of relief knowing that my little kitten was on the mend. As we approached Wonwon’s crate, I felt a rush of affection and was about to lean in for a hug when Jangmi placed a gentle hand on my arm.

“Hold on a second,” she said softly but firmly. “Wonwon is still recovering, so it’s best not to handle him too much just yet. He needs some more time to regain his strength.”

I nodded, taking in her words. “Thank you for letting me know. I really appreciate everything you and the clinic have done for him.”

As we stood together by Wonwon’s crate, I decided to ask Jangmi about her work. “How long have you been working here?”

For a moment, Jangmi’s expression seemed to cloud over, a hint of sadness flickering across her face. “Well, the clinic actually belongs to my dad. It was my mom’s idea to start it,” she said quietly.

Noticing the shift in her mood, I quickly decided to change the subject. “That’s really interesting,” I said, hoping to lift the atmosphere. “Do you have any pets yourself?”

Jangmi’s face lit up as she spoke about her beloved pug. “Yes, I have a pug named Yoda. He’s the sweetest little guy. I absolutely adore him.”

Just as Jangmi and I were enjoying our conversation, the bell at the clinic’s entrance jingled, signaling someone’s arrival.

We headed back to the main room, and I was greeted by an unexpected sight. There stood Jungwon, holding a white Shih Tzu; Chenle, with the rescued cat Beans; and, to my surprise and mild dismay, Minji accompanied by her cousin Sunghoon, who was cradling a white poodle.

The room fell into an awkward silence as we all processed the unexpected gathering. It was a scene of sheer randomness—four people, each with their own pet, converging in one place.

My gaze shifted from Jungwon to Chenle to Minji and Sunghoon, and it seemed everyone was equally puzzled.

The tension was palpable until Minji broke the silence with her trademark laugh.

“Well, isn’t this a delightful twist of fate?” she exclaimed, her laughter ringing through the clinic. “It’s like a pet adoption fair exploded in here!”

Chenle, who always seemed to be on the same wavelength as Minji, couldn’t contain his amusement.

He joined in the laughter, his eyes sparkling with mirth. “Seriously,” he said, “This is turning into quite the spectacle. Maybe we should have set up a petting zoo.”

Jungwon looked around, his expression a mix of confusion and mild embarrassment.

“Uh, hey, Lian,” he said, trying to make sense of the situation. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”
