chapter thirty

The final bell rang, echoing through the emptying halls of the school. I gathered my books, stuffing them haphazardly into my backpack as I made my way out of the classroom.

It had been a long day filled with endless meetings and responsibilities that came with being the student council president.

Sometimes, I wondered if taking on this role was worth the constant exhaustion, but then I’d remember the smiles on the students’ faces during events and realize it was all worth it.

As I walked towards the parking lot, I spotted Sunoo leaning against my car, his arms crossed and a playful smirk on his face.

He always managed to beat me here, no matter how quickly I tried to escape the clutches of our ever-demanding teachers.

“Took you long enough,” he teased as I approached.

“Sorry, Mr. Kim decided to give me a lecture about leadership and responsibility... again,” I replied, rolling my eyes as I unlocked the car doors.

Sunoo laughed, shaking his head as he slid into the passenger seat. “Well, that’s what you get for being the golden boy of the school.”

I chuckled, starting the engine and pulling out of the parking lot. The sky was overcast, dark clouds gathering ominously above us.

It looked like it was going to rain any minute now.

“So, have I told you about Sunhee and Kiara’s latest scheme?” Sunoo began, his voice filled with a mix of exasperation and amusement.

I glanced at him briefly before focusing back on the road. “No, what are they up to now?”

“They’re planning to open an online bake shop,” Sunoo said, waving his hands dramatically. “Can you believe it? Sunhee and Kiara can barely agree on what movie to watch, and now they want to run a business together.”

I couldn’t help but smile at the thought. Sunoo's sister, Sunhee, and his girlfriend, Kiara, were known for their constant bickering, but anyone who knew them could see how close they'd become.

They were practically sisters at this point, bonded by more than just their connection to Sunoo.

“Well, maybe this will bring them closer,” I said, thinking of how they always ended up in fits of laughter after their arguments. “Plus, Kiara’s baking is top-notch. They might just make it work.”

“True,” Sunoo conceded, tapping his chin thoughtfully. “But Sunhee wants all their cupcakes to be Minion-themed. Minions, Jungwon! She’s obsessed.”

I laughed out loud at that, picturing Sunhee's determined face as she insisted on her Minion-themed cupcakes. “I’m sure they’ll find a middle ground. Maybe Minion cupcakes with gourmet flavors?”

Sunoo groaned, leaning back in his seat. “I hope so. Otherwise, I’ll have to listen to Kiara ranting about it for hours.”

As Sunoo continued to elaborate on the details of their bake shop plans, my mind began to drift.

My eyes traced the darkening sky, watching as the first few raindrops splattered against the windshield. The rhythmic pattering was almost soothing, but it brought with it a sense of unease.

Jillian crossed my mind then. I wondered if she had an umbrella with her. She tended to forget small things like that, always too engrossed in her thoughts or the latest book she was reading.

The image of her getting caught in the rain, drenched and shivering, made me frown.

Then there was the matter of SD.
