chapter forty three

As the music shifted to a lively beat, my Tita clapped her hands enthusiastically. “Alright, everyone! Let’s liven this party up with some dancing! Come on, it’s easy—just follow along!”

I laughed nervously as my relatives began demonstrating a few simple dance steps. They made it look so easy, but I wasn’t sure I’d survive this without tripping over my own feet. Before I could escape to the sidelines, Jungwon suddenly appeared in front of me, his hand extended.

He looked shy, almost hesitant, but his eyes were steady. “Would you like to dance?”

For a moment, I just stared at him, surprised. I could hear Minji snickering somewhere in the background, and I knew I’d never hear the end of it if I said no. So, swallowing my nerves, I placed my hand in his. “Sure.”

His hand was warm and steady as he led me onto the makeshift dance floor. The music felt softer somehow, less daunting, as he started guiding me through the steps my relatives had demonstrated.

“You’re pretty good at this,” I said, smiling up at him.

“Not really,” he admitted with a small chuckle. “I just didn’t want to mess up and step on your toes.”

“You’re doing fine,” I assured him, and for a few moments, everything felt... easy.

But then, Chenle’s voice broke through the moment. “My turn!” he declared, appearing out of nowhere.

Jungwon’s hand tensed slightly in mine before he reluctantly stepped back. Chenle grinned at me, his confidence almost blinding. “One dance with him is enough. Now you get the best partner.”

I rolled my eyes but couldn’t help laughing as Chenle spun me dramatically, earning applause from my titas.

The lightheartedness spread quickly. Jay and Eunjoo joined the dancing, looking like the absolute sweetest pair. Jay kept one arm protectively around Eunjoo, spinning her gently while she giggled, her other hand resting on her baby bump.

They looked so natural together that even my cousins couldn’t stop cooing.

Not far from them, Heeseung and Sunhee were the picture of cuteness, both giggling shyly as they danced. Sunhee kept whispering something to Heeseung, which made him laugh softly, his cheeks pink.

Kiara and Sunoo had paired up as well, smiling at each other like they were sharing a secret joke. They moved gracefully, almost in sync, and I couldn’t help but feel a tiny pang of envy at how effortlessly happy they looked.

Then there was Minji and Ni-ki. Their dance was anything but graceful.

“Ow!” Ni-ki yelped as Minji deliberately stepped on his foot.

“Oops,” she said innocently, though the smirk on her face gave her away.

Ni-ki retaliated by stepping on her foot, earning a dramatic gasp. “That’s it! You’re going down, Nishimura!”

Everyone was laughing by this point, and I could see even my parents trying to stifle their amusement.

Rei, meanwhile, was having none of it. “I’m not dancing with him,” she declared, pointing at Dongpyo. “Liz would never forgive me.”

Dongpyo rolled his eyes. “Like I want to dance with you anyway. I’ll find someone better.”

True to his word, he made his way over to one of my cousins, Angelica, who happily accepted. Watching him strut around like he was the king of the dance floor had me and my relatives cracking up.
