"Is it just me, or does it feel like we have a real shot at regionals next month?" Mercedes said with a smile as she, Tina, Kurt, Melanie, and Artie walked through the hall.

Artie nodded. "The Ohio show choir chat rooms have all been buzzing about how Vocal Adrenaline has lost a step," he stated.

"I agree. The judges know all their tricks, and now that we have Jesse, they've lost their best performer," Kurt added.

The group was stopped by Rachel hurriedly stepping in front of them. "You guys have to come to the auditorium. It's an emergency," Rachel stressed.

They all exchanged confused looks before following her to the auditorium, where the rest of the glee club members were already gathered. Melanie and Kurt shared a confused glance as they saw Jesse on the auditorium stage with Vocal Adrenaline.

"Jesse? What are you doing up there with them?" Melanie questioned, the hurt evident in her voice.

"I've transferred back to Carmel High, Rachel," he stated coldly. "I'm sorry that it's come to this, but you guys were awful to me," he glared, before glancing at Melanie. "Except Melanie. I actually don't hate you," he added.

"Thank you," Melanie replied, earning a shove from Kurt.

"The rest of you never accepted me. You never listened to my clearly superior ideas," Jesse finished.

"Why are you here in our auditorium?" Finn asked.

"The blogs and chat rooms say that we're finished and that you're ripe to topple us. We just wanted to show you a little something we came up with a few days ago—see if you agree with that assessment," Jesse explained as Vocal Adrenaline took their places and the music began to play.

The glee club stood in shock as the performance finished.

"Thanks for letting us use your auditorium, guys. It's quaint," the brunette next to Jesse teased.

Jesse gave the New Directions one last look, his eyes lingering on Rachel. His cold stare turned to one of sadness before hardening again, and he walked out.

The New Directions made their way back to the choir room, their high hopes from that morning officially crushed.

"It's a Carmel High tradition—they psych out the competition a few weeks before the big show. They call it a 'funkification,' meaning they show us what they've got, and we spiral into a deep, black funk," Artie explained.

"It's definitely effective," Melanie grumbled.

"Yeah, we used to do the same thing to other football teams. Try to get inside their heads, pull little pranks to intimidate them," Finn added.

"Yeah, the difference was, our football team sucked. Those guys are golden," Puck said glumly.

"C'mon, keep your heads up, guys. It's gonna take more than that..." Kurt began, trying to lift the team's spirits. His pep talk trailed off when they entered the choir room and saw that Vocal Adrenaline had TP'd the entire room.

"Get us into a funk," he finished slowly, looking around the room.

"Is this enough to get us into a funk?" Melanie asked with a pout, pulling at the toilet paper hanging from the ceiling. The rest nodded, any remaining sense of optimism now squashed.

The New Directions had officially been "funkified."
