"Guys, I've got some bad news," Mr. Schue announced. "You know how we decided on Sing by My Chemical Romance for regionals? Well, I hold in my hand a cease and desist letter from the band. We can't do it."
"It was the perfect anthem," Puck groaned.
"How much do you wanna bet Coach Sylvester has something to do with this?" Mercedes added bitterly.
"One step ahead of you," Mr. Schue replied, explaining how he had already confronted the cheer coach, who admitted to doing so without batting an eye.
"So, what are we gonna do now?" Mercedes asked.
"I think we should write original songs for regionals," Rachel suggested.
"All those in favor of voting Rachel down a second time?" Santana asked, raising her hand. Mercedes, Lauren, Artie, and Brittany with both hands followed suit.
"No, I think Rachel is right," Quinn stated, shocking everyone.
"Did Quinn just agree with Rachel?" Melanie whispered to Sam, looking between the two.
Sam nodded, equally confused, adding, "Someone should check if hell's frozen over." Melanie covered her mouth to hide her chuckle, making Sam smile proudly to himself.
"This team works best when we push ourselves and do something a little different," Quinn continued.
"That's true, but if all the other teams are doing amazing songs, we're not gonna be so good," Mercedes argued.
"You're right, we're not gonna be as good, we're gonna be better. We won't be using other people's words or music, it'll be our own—our heart, our soul, not just our voices. We have a really talented songwriter in our midst. Rachel." Quinn's words caused Rachel to look back at the blonde in surprise. "I was thinking maybe you and I could write a song together," she suggested.
"I'm with Quinn and Rachel," Finn nodded. "I mean, if these two can agree on something, it's probably an idea worth considering."
"Wait, wait, so suddenly you two are writing the music for regionals? No way. I think everyone should get a chance," Santana cut in.
"Santana's right. We can do this," Sam agreed, earning nods from the rest of the group.
"What do you think, Mr. Schue?" Mercedes asked.
"I think we're doing original songs for regionals," he decided, with Rachel clapping excitedly.

"Have you written anything yet?" Sam asked, turning to Melanie.
"A little... I mean, it's not really... it's just nothing we can actually use for regionals," she mumbled, she couldn't exactly tell him the truth—that she was writing a song about him.
Sam nodded, looking at her with mild curiosity. "Well, maybe once it's done, I could hear it," he suggested with a hopeful smile.
She forced a small nod, trying to seem nonchalant. "Maybe," she said softly, her voice almost betraying her. Thankfully, Mr. Schue walked in at that moment, giving her a much-needed escape from the conversation.
"All right, guys, let's hear it for our first songwriting seminar!" Mr. Schue announced, entering the room with a stack of books in hand. "While Quinn and Rachel are hard at work, we're going to try to write an anthem of our own. Now, these are rhyming dictionaries for all of you," he explained, passing them out.
"Mr. Schue? Tina and I have already been working on a song that I wrote," Santana said.
"Really? That's amazing! Can we hear it?" Mr. Schue asked, genuinely excited.
