In the choir room, Quinn and Finn stared lovingly into each other's eyes as they sang lead on "Don't Stop Believin'", with the other members singing backup until Quinn halted, looking like she was going to throw up.

"Quinn, you okay?" Mr. Schue asked as she raced out the door.

"I think she just had a bad breakfast burrito," Finn said, trying to explain his girlfriend's sickness.

"Can we please talk about the giant elephant in the room?" Kurt interjected.

"Your sexuality," Santana quipped.

"Rachel–we can't do it without her," he said, side-eyeing the Latina cheerleader.

"That's not true," Mr. Schue replied. "We may have to layer Santana and Mercedes over Quinn's solo, but... we'll be fine." He turned to the shy brunette in the back. "And Melanie, I can barely hear you. You gotta sing louder."

"Maybe for the invitationals, but not for the sectionals, and certainly not the regionals," Artie added.

"The wheelchair kid's right. The Rachel chick makes me want to light myself on fire, but she can sing," Puck agreed.

"Rachel left, guys. She's gone. Now, if we're gonna make this thing work, we can't look back. All right, take five, guys," Mr. Schue said, going back to the piano. The rest sat down while Finn went to speak to Mr. Schue.

"Ugh, I can't do this," Melanie groaned.

"It's only been a week." Kurt said.

"And I already suck," she added.

"I'm pretty sure you'd have to actually sing in order to suck, Mousy," Puck said. Melanie rolled her eyes.

"Stop calling me that," she mumbled.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure you've just been mouthing the words this whole time," Santana added, not even looking away from the handheld mirror she was using to apply her lip gloss. Melanie slumped in her seat, with Kurt patting her shoulder.

"Give it time, you'll build up the confidence," Kurt advised, trying to reassure the girl.

The next glee rehearsal, Mr. Schuester stood in the middle of the choir room with a blonde woman Melanie had never seen before standing next to him.

"Guys, I'd like to introduce you to someone very special. This is April Rhodes. She's our newest member," he explained, leaving everyone speechless.

"Wait, so old people can join glee club now?" Finn questioned.

"Old, huh? You guys look like the world's worst Benetton ad," April shot back.

"Mr. Schuester, this seems like a terrible idea," Artie said Melanie nodded her head, agreeing. She cleared her throat awkwardly and half-heartedly raised her hand.

"You don't have to raise your hand, Mousy," Quinn stated, rolling her eyes. Melanie frowned at the nickname, her hand still in the air.

"Yes, Melanie?" Mr. Schue called out.

"Don't glee club members have to be students?" she questioned softly, not understanding why he would bring in an adult to join a high school show choir, especially when so many members were already so talented.

"April is a great singer. And she never graduated," Mr. Schue answered.

"We appreciate what you're trying to do, but she's no Rachel," Mercedes stated.
