Melanie stood next to Finn at his locker, watching as he rummaged through the mess of books and papers. He pulled out a U.S. History textbook and groaned loudly, his forehead hitting the locker door.
"Ugh, I forgot I had this class," Finn grumbled.
Melanie furrowed her brows in confusion. "How do you forget you have a class?" she asked, genuinely baffled.
"It's hard to keep track of everything!" Finn complained, running a hand through his hair. "School, Rachel, football, Glee club, maintaining my popularity, Rachel..."
"That's what coffee is for," she quipped, lifting her cup from the Lima Bean, taking a dramatic sip.
Finn glanced at her cup and shrugged. "I've never tried coffee."
"What? How could you not have tried coffee?" she gasped.
He just shrugged again, grabbing a crumpled assignment from the depths of his locker. He stared at it, flipping it back and forth like it was written in a foreign language. "When did I do this?" he mumbled to himself.
But Melanie wasn't paying attention. "You have to try it, Finn. No wonder you can't keep track of anything! How do you even function without it?"
Finn was still focused on the paper, turning it over in his hands with a frown. "I think this was due last year," he muttered, staring off into space, clearly confused.
Melanie barely paused, still going on about coffee. "It's honestly kind of addicting," she said, then without warning, pushed her cup towards him. "Do you wanna try it?"
Finn looked at the cup with a deep frown, shaking his head slowly. "Nah, I'm good."
He turned back to her and, noticing how much she'd been rambling, asked, "How much coffee have you had?"
Melanie blinked, her mouth still halfway open, before responding sheepishly, "Three."
"It's 8:00 in the morning." Finn said with wide eyes.
She shrugged, waving the cup around. "Yeah, well, it's literally the only thing keeping me alive right now." Her voice dropped a little as she added, "I've been having trouble sleeping lately."
Finn was about to ask why when his eyes shifted past her. His face scrunched up in confusion.
"Mom?" he asked, sounding surprised.
Melanie turned to see Burt and Carole walking toward them, Kurt trailing in between the two.
"What's going on?" Finn asked with furrowed brows. "Is this one of those interventions, 'cause..."
"If it is, it's for both of us. They bombarded me and forced me to bring them to you," Kurt replied, looking just as confused as Finn.
"Okay, come on, tell them," Burt began.
"No, no," Carole argued.
"We said in the car—" Burt said
"Come on, you tell them, please," Carole insisted.
Melanie watched in amusement as the couple bickered sweetly.
"All right. So, you know how I drive Carole to work every Tuesday? Well, today I drove her here, and we snuck into that classroom where Kurt introduced us," Burt explained, moving to put an arm around Carole. "Very romantic of me, I might add, and I—"
"He proposed! He proposed!" Carole exclaimed excitedly.
"You stole the punch line," Burt laughed.
Melanie's hands flew to her mouth in surprise.
