"Alright, we need $5,000 to pay for our trip to nationals in New York," Mr. Schue announced, turning to the group.
"What happened to the money we got from the Cheerios?" Quinn asked.
"Uh, I guess Sue was hiding it in offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. And we're having trouble accessing some of it... any of it." Mr. Schue sighed. He grabbed some taffy from on top of the piano. "This is saltwater taffy," he added.
"I love saltwater!" Brittany stated excitedly.
"When I was a student here, we paid for our entire trip to nationals selling this," he explained, tossing the taffy to the students. "Classroom to classroom, door to door. We pushed this stuff like crack. And so will we. To make $5,000 at 25 cents apiece, we need to sell 20,000 pieces of taffy."
"Well, that's not happening," Melanie muttered.
"Wait. Do you honestly think we can sell 20,000 anythings?" Santana asked, raising a skeptical eyebrow. "I mean, we won regionals for the first time since dinosaurs roamed the planet, and I still got a freaking cherry Icee facial," she added bitterly.
"Yeah, Santana's right. Nobody cares about us," Quinn agreed.
"I can't listen to this," Mike said, grabbing his bag and getting up.
"Mike, are you okay?" Mr. Schue asked, concerned.
"No," Mike replied, turning back to the group. "You guys complain all the time about being mistreated, but you have no idea what it's like to work your butt off for something and have everyone—even your friends—ignore you."
"I'm so trying to remember his name right now," Lauren mumbled, leaning over to Puck, earning a confused glare from Melanie.
"Artie, Tina, Brittany, and I are on the Braniacs," Mike explained, the named three moving to join him.
"Isn't that the academic decathlon team?" Rachel asked.
"Wait, we have one of those?" Finn asked, furrowing his brows, his voice slightly muffled from the taffy in his mouth.
"Yes, we do," Artie sighed, crossing his arms. "And the four of us went on 'Smarty Pants' and beat Carmel High to qualify for the next Academic Decathlon finals next week."
"Wait, you guys were on TV? Why didn't you tell us about it?" Sam asked.
"We did," they all said in unison.
"Melanie's the only one who listened," Tina added, gesturing to her.
"Wait, I get the three of you being on the team," Mr. Schue began.
"Because two of them are Asian and Artie wears glasses?" Puck suggested.
Melanie let out a sigh and lightly smacked him on the back of the head.
"No," Mr. Schue denied, "but Brittany?"
"Liz Schneider was our fourth, but she got rubella," Mike answered.
"Her parents are hippies who don't believe in vaccinations," Tina explained.
"Brittany was the only person we could find on short notice," Artie added.
"I must say, Britt, I was very impressed by your knowledge of cat diseases," Melanie complimented.
Brittany smiled brightly, pointing at Melanie. "Thanks, Mouse!"
"When is everyone gonna stop calling me that?" Melanie grumbled, earning a chuckle from Puck.
"Sadly, we can't afford to go to the finals, so we're going to have to forfeit," Artie said.
