"All right, let's uh, let's gather around," Mr. Schue called out, entering the choir room. "Sorry I'm late, guys. I was with Principal Figgins," he added, taking a seat on a stool. He sighed, giving the group a serious look before speaking up again. "Bad news, guys. Puckerman's in juvie."
"Of course he is," Melanie groaned.
"It really was just a matter of time," Tina stated simply.
"What did he do?" Quinn questioned.
"He drove his mom's Volvo through the front of a convenience store and drove off with the ATM," Mr. Schue answered disappointedly.
"That's so stupid. What did he think was gonna happen?" Melanie questioned, throwing her hands up exasperatedly.
"And when is he getting out?" Rachel asked.
"Unknown," Mr. Schue replied with a frown.
"He might be the dumbest person on the planet, and that's coming from me," Brittany said with a laugh.
"Guys! Let's have some sympathy," Mr. Schue said.
"For a guy who put his needs above the team? We need his voice and his bad-boy stage presence," Finn said irritably.
"We can't look at this as a crisis. It's an opportunity," Mr. Schue tried to reason.
"For what? Further embarrassment and humiliation?" Quinn asked.
"For welcoming our new member, Sam Evans!" he announced, as Sam jogged through the door to stand next to the teacher.
Melanie sat up straighter, a small smile forming on her lips.
"Hey everybody, uh, I'm Sam. Sam I am. And I don't like green eggs and ham," he introduced jokingly.
Melanie chuckled, though most of the group didn't seem to find the introduction as funny.
"Oh wow, he has no game," Santana stated.
Melanie kicked the girl's chair and clapped for the blonde boy, trying to make his welcome a little warmer. Sam smiled at her appreciatively.
"Okay, this is gonna be great," Finn announced, trying to change the awkward vibe. "You're not gonna regret joining, Sam." Finn said, getting up and shaking his hand.
"Oh, good," Sam muttered as he took a seat next to Finn.
"All right, question for the group. What's a duet?" Mr. Schue questioned, writing "duet" on the board.
"A blanket," Brittany answered.
"A duet is when two voices join to become one," Mr. Schue said. "Great duets are like a great marriage—the singers complement each other, push each other to be better," he began to explain.
"Psst! He's on Team Gay," Kurt whispered to Melanie, gesturing to Sam.
"What? No? How do you know?" Melanie whispered frantically.
"No straight boy dyes his hair to look like Linda Evangelista circa 1993," he answered.
"Well, how do you know he dyes it?" she asked.
Kurt gave her a knowing look, to which she nodded. "Yeah, yeah, okay.... so you're sure he's gay?" she questioned, looking down at the blonde boy.
Kurt looked at her, then at Sam, then back to her. "Oh my God, you like him?" Kurt whispered.
"He's my friend," she answered.
"Yeah, he's your friend... that you like," Kurt said, a smile growing.
