As the weeks passed, Melanie was able to settle in, and she was actually starting to like it at McKinley, though that was mostly due to Kurt. Over the weeks, Melanie and Kurt had become quite close. It was nice, and it was new for Melanie; at her last school, she didn't have any friends despite knowing most of the students since grade school. What could she say? Invisibility was her superpower... or curse. Kurt had really taken her under his wing, from waiting for her in the mornings at the front of the school—if he wasn't thrown in a dumpster that day—to walking with her between classes. He had invited her to sit at lunch with him and the other glee club members, but she declined, feeling like she would make it awkward and opting to eat in various places: the auditorium, the bleachers, empty classrooms, etc.

Melanie walked up to the school, seeing Kurt waiting for her with two coffees in hand. "I stopped at the Lima Bean before school; I figured I couldn't go wrong with a mocha latte," he greeted, handing the girl a coffee.

"You figured right, thanks Kurt," Melanie thanked as the two entered the school.

"So last night my dad walked in on me recording my 'Single Ladies' performance with Tina and Britt." Kurt began.

"No." Melanie gasped.

"Yes, full unitard with sequin vest," he sighed.

"What did he say?" She asked.

"Well, not much, since Britt told him I was a kicker on the football team... I'm screwed," he groaned.

"Well, not necessarily. Studies have shown that dance helps improve football players, so if you get some help from Finn to, you know, show you the ropes and get your foot in the door, then I think you could do it," Melanie suggested optimistically.

"Yeah, I guess it's not like I have a choice. I appreciate the vote of confidence, Mel," Kurt smiled. "Speaking of Finn... have you given any more thought to joining glee club?" he asked.

"Kurt, you know I can't," she answered.

"We need more people, and it could really help get you out of your shell," Kurt continued as the two halted at her locker.

"Look, Glee seems great and all, but the idea of singing in front of one person makes me want to vomit, let alone a whole crowd," she added, putting her books in her locker. As the bell rang, signaling they needed to go to class. Melanie turned to head to class.

"Just think about it," Kurt called out as the girl made her way to class.

Melanie sat on the bleachers, her eyes fixed on the football field where practice was in full swing. She had decided it might be nice for Kurt to see a friendly face when trying out. Just then, Kurt emerged onto the field, clad in his signature red waist-length sweater and blue headband. Melanie couldn't help but chuckle; only Kurt could look like he was on his way to a jazzercise class and still pull it off with such flair.

After Kurt exchanged words with the coach and huddled with the team, he put on his helmet and made his way to the center of the field. As "Single Ladies" began to play from his stereo, Kurt danced with finesse, his movements fluid and confident. With each kick of the ball, he maintained his rhythm, sending it soaring towards the field goal. Melanie jumped to her feet, clapping enthusiastically, amazed by Kurt's talent. Kurt, catching sight of her, waved back with a grin, basking in the moment of accomplishment.

As practice dispersed, Kurt made his way down the bleachers to meet Melanie at the bottom. The girl greeted him with a warm hug. "Kurt, that was amazing!" she beamed.
