The New Directions sat in Mr. Schue's living room, staring vacantly at the untouched pizza on the center table. No one wanted to admit the elephant in the room—that this would be one of the last times they'd all be sitting together. The reality of the situation was sinking in.
Sure, they may have been able to "funkify" Vocal Adrenaline, and it felt good, but they had to be realistic: there was no way they could beat them. They were going to lose at regionals, and then they'd all go their separate ways. Brittany, Santana, and probably Quinn, once she had her baby, would go back to being the mean Cheerios, who didn't dare say anything to the other glee clubbers except to throw out insults from time to time. The football players would return to being the cool jocks at the top of the food chain, defacing yearbooks and only stopping to greet the geeks when it was time for a dreaded slushie attack. Their little family would be torn apart.
Melanie kept her eyes on the floor, afraid she would cry if she made eye contact with the others, let alone spoke up. She had never had one true friend before McKinley, let alone a whole group of them. For the first time in her life, she didn't feel alone. She supposed she should have expected this—after all, the other shoe always drops.
"Nobody wants any pizza?" Mr. Schue questioned as he walked in from the kitchen, Quinn following suit. "All right, well, uh, let's get started," he said, clapping his hands together. "Thank you for coming to the first annual New Directions Regionals Set List Nomination Party," he announced.
"What's the point, Mr. Schue? Coach Sylvester's one of the judges. She's gonna crush us," Artie stated sadly.
"Artie, you don't know that," Mr. Schue argued.
"Yes, we do. She told us at Cheerios practice," Santana muttered glumly.
"Yeah, she said, 'I'm going to crush Glee Club,'" Brittany confirmed with a weak nod.
"The whole freaking year. All that hard work for nothing," Puck grumbled as Tina began to cry.
"I'm sorry," she apologized with a sniffle. "I just really love you guys," she sobbed. "You know how many Facebook friends I had before I joined Glee Club? Two. My parents. Rachel was right—being a part of something special...it made me special. I just can't believe it's gonna be over in a week," she cried.
As Tina cried, tears began to form in Melanie's eyes. She looked down further, trying to avoid her tears being seen.
"Wait. Who says it's gonna be over?" Finn asked.
"Please. You think Puck and Santana are even gonna acknowledge my existence once we're not in Glee Club anymore?" Mercedes questioned.
"She has a point," Puck said solemnly.
Melanie sniffled, her tears now falling freely. Finn placed his hand on her back, rubbing it comfortingly as he gave her a sad smile.
"Sorry... I'm sorry," she apologized, quickly wiping her tears, though it was no use—they kept falling. "I just... I never let people in... This is honestly the first time in my life I've had friends and a space where I feel comfortable enough to be myself... I'm really gonna miss this," she finished between sobs.
"Mr. Schuester... do you think, instead of nominating songs, we could just... all go around the room and talk about the things we loved about Glee Club this year?" she asked, her voice breaking at the end.
And so, the Glee Club members went around the room, crying and talking about all the things they loved and would miss about Glee Club.
The next day everyone sat in the choir room as Mr. Schuester wrote "Journey" on the board.
