"I take it we have a lot of sweater trains to look forward to this season," Tina remarked, looking at Kurt's sweater, walking down the hall with him and Melanie.
Before Kurt could respond, Karofsky shoved him against a locker. Melanie shot a glare at the football player as he walked off.
"You okay?" Tina asked, concern in her voice.
"Yeah. Fine," Kurt replied, his eyes following Karofsky's retreating figure.
"Maybe we should go to Principal Figgins—" Melanie began.
"It's not gonna do anything," Kurt interrupted, shaking his head as they continued to the choir room.
"Okay, what about going to Coach Beiste?" Melanie suggested, earning a nod from Tina.
Kurt shook his head again.
"Kurt, it's getting worse—" Melanie started to argue, but Kurt sighed, gently grabbing her shoulders.
"Melanie, I appreciate it, I do, but I'm fine," he said, though she could tell he wasn't. She could tell Karofsky's attack had rattled him. She could see how withdrawn Kurt had become, even in Glee Club. She noticed the nervousness in the way he walked the halls, and she could tell how alone he felt, being the only out kid. She could tell he wasn't fine, but she decided not to push. She didn't want to make things worse, or so she tried to convince herself. So, she simply nodded.
When they reached the choir room, Melanie was surprised to see Puck back in the fold. As she took her seat, she playfully smacked him on the back of the head.
"Ow! What the hell, Mouse?" he yelped, rubbing the spot.
"You know what that was for," she replied, pointing at him accusingly.
"Alright, guys, let's get down to business," Mr. Schue called out, drawing everyone's attention. "First, let's welcome back Noah Puckerman."
The rest of the group applauded as Puck gave a nod of approval.
"See that, Mouse? That's a welcome," Puck said, turning to her with a smirk. Melanie rolled her eyes, already feeling annoyed by his presence, though she couldn't deny she had missed the mohawk-clad bad boy.
"Puck, I hope your time in juvie has taught you a lesson about right and wrong," Mr. Schue said pointedly.
"Are you kidding me? I ruled that place. All I did was crack skulls and lift weights all day," Puck replied smugly.
"Wow, what a catch. Can't believe I ever let you go," Quinn muttered sarcastically.
"And now, drum roll, Finn!" Mr. Schue called out, grabbing everyone's attention. Finn eagerly drummed on his textbook as Mr. Schue held up a paper. "Because I have in my hand our competition for Sectionals next month."
The group gave excited hoots and hollers.
"First, the a cappella choir from the all-boys private school in Westerville, the Dalton Academy Warblers."
"Okay, hold up. Like, a million awesome gay jokes just popped into my head," Santana quipped, earning a glare from Kurt and an eye roll from Mercedes.
"And the other team to beat, The Hipsters, a first-year club from the Warren Township Continuing Education program. They're a glee club composed entirely of elderly people getting their high school GEDs," Mr. Schue explained.
"Is that legal?" Rachel asked, raising an eyebrow.
"How are we supposed to compete against a bunch of adorable old people?" Mercedes questioned, crossing her arms.
