Samira sat on the edge of her bed, her leg bouncing uncontrollably as she stared at the phone in her hand. The room was silent except for the occasional chirping of birds outside her window, but her mind was anything but calm. She had been texting her mother all day, arranging a dinner for that evening at her home.
Latrice had sounded thrilled, as she always was when her daughter and grandson came over, and the thought of a home-cooked meal and her mother's warm embrace should have comforted Samira. But anticipation gnawed at her, making her stomach churn.
She knew her mother would be supportive—Latrice always had been—but that didn't stop the flood of what-ifs that clouded her thoughts. What if she thought it was too soon? What if she had doubts about Chris being involved? Samira tried to shake the thoughts away, but they clung stubbornly. She exhaled deeply, leaning back on the bed and letting her head fall against the headboard. Across the room, Sadiah lay sprawled on the rug, his tiny fingers making a battle scene with his favorite action figures.
She watched him for a moment, her heart softening as he made exaggerated movements, his face scrunched in concentration. At times like this, she marveled at his resilience and how easily he found joy despite the challenges he faced. When he looked up and caught her staring, his curious tilt of the head sent a small pang of guilt through her. He always knew when something was on her mind.
It was time to tell him.
Sliding off the bed, Samira joined him on the floor, her legs folding beneath her. She reached out, touching his hand lightly to get his attention before her fingers began to move, signing with deliberate care.
