╰┈➤ ᯓᡣ𐭩 chapter nine
Sukuna's steps echoed through the cave, the oppressive silence pressing in around him as he approached the faint light. The stench of blood and the residual energy from the battle hung heavy in the air, a testament to the fierce struggle that had taken place. His curiosity was piqued- this wasn't just any ordinary fight, and whoever had defeated the beast was no mere sorcerer. { Beta reader: no you ugly squid head it's your past lover dumbass }
As he finally reached the source of the glow, Sukuna stopped in his tracks. Lying on the cold stone floor, battered and broken, was a woman- a sight that both intrigued and puzzled him. A twisted smirk tugged at his lips as he mused to himself, "A woman, huh? So she's the one who brought down that beast?" { Beta reader: no the mice did, DO YOU SEE ANYONE ELSE THERE?? dumb fucking ass } [ author: why are you beefing with him like Yuna?༎ຶ‿༎ຶ ]
His eyes roved over her, taking in the extent of her injuries, the blood staining her clothes, the way her breath hitched weakly in her chest. She looked so fragile, so utterly defeated, and yet.... she had won. Sukuna began to close the distance between them, his mind prepared to dismiss her as just another curiosity, a momentary distraction in his otherwise endless existence.
But as he stepped closer, something unexpected happened. The smirk faded, his amusement giving way to an unsettling sensation deep in his chest. His gaze fixed on her face, and for reasons he couldn't comprehend, his frozen, cursed heart gave a faint, almost imperceptible throb. It was as if a buried memory, long forgotten, was trying to resurface- something about her was achingly familiar.
He hesitated, his mind racing to grasp the elusive memory that seemed just out of reach. Who was she? Why did looking at her stir something so profound within him? The questions gnawed at him, frustrating him in a way that few things could.
Sukuna knelt beside her, his eyes never leaving her face. He reached out almost instinctively, his hand moving of its own accord to brush against her cheek. The moment his fingers made contact with her skin, a strange warmth bloomed in his chest. His touch, meant to be rough, ended up being gentle- so gentle, in fact, that it surprised even him. How could he, the King of Curses, be capable of such tenderness?
Sayako stirred under his hand, her eyelids fluttering as she tried to open her eyes. Her vision was hazy, but she recognized him through the fog of pain and exhaustion. Despite everything, her heart knew him, remembered him. And that recognition brought a small, weak smile to her lips.
"Sukuna..." she muttered, her voice barely above a whisper. She summoned the last of her strength to lift her hand, placing it over his in a gesture that was both tender and intimate. The touch sent a shiver down Sukuna's spine, his eyes widening slightly as the sound of his name on her lips echoed in his mind. It was a sound that stirred something deep within him, something primal and long forgotten. { Beta reader: ugly ass }
His cursed heart lurched, a strange and unwelcome sensation for someone who prided himself on being above such emotions. He should have been indifferent, should have left her there to whatever fate awaited her. But as he knelt beside her, staring into her eyes that held a mixture of pain and familiarity, he found himself unable to do so.
As her consciousness slipped away once more, her hand fell limply from his, and her eyes fluttered closed. Sukuna watched her for a moment, his expression unreadable, caught between frustration and something far more complex. He cursed himself under his breath, angry at the unfamiliar emotions that threatened to cloud his judgment.
"This woman..." he murmured to himself, "What is she doing to me?" His mind raced as he tried to piece together why she felt so familiar, why her presence seemed to pull at something deep within him that he had buried long ago.
His eyes fell to the extent of her injuries, the blood seeping through her tattered clothes. She was on the brink of death- yet something inside him rebelled against the idea of letting her die. With a groan of frustration, Sukuna extended his hand once more, this time summoning the power of his reverse cursed technique. The glow of healing energy enveloped her, slowly knitting her wounds back together, closing the worst of them.
"Uraume" he called out
Uraume, who had been waiting in the shadows, stepped forward at Sukuna's call. They had witnessed the entire exchange, their sharp eyes catching the way Sukuna's demeanor had shifted the moment he laid eyes on the woman. They knew who she was- the purple-eyed user of the Yurechi Clan, Sayako, a figure of considerable renown. But they said nothing, their loyalty to Sukuna overriding any curiosity or concern.
"Take her," Sukuna commanded, his voice cold and authoritative, masking the turmoil within him. "Bring her to the shrine."
Uraume bowed slightly, acknowledging the order with a glance at Sayako's unconscious form. They moved to her side, carefully lifting her into their arms. Even in her weakened state, they could sense the remnants of her cursed energy, the power that had allowed her to survive the beast's onslaught.
Sukuna stood back, watching as Uraume prepared to carry Sayako away. His gaze lingered on her longer than he intended, the same nagging sense of familiarity gnawing at him. Why did she affect him so? What was it about her that made him feel this way? The questions battered his mind, but no answers came.
Turning abruptly, Sukuna began to walk away, his footsteps heavy against the stone floor of the cave. He forced his expression back to its usual indifference, determined to ignore the disquiet in his chest. He is the King of Curses, after all- he had no time for such foolish emotions. Yet, as he left the cave, the image of her face, the sound of her muttering his name, the feel of her touch, lingered in his thoughts.
He tried to push it aside, but the connection between them was undeniable, even if he couldn't understand it. Perhaps it was a remnant of his past life, something buried so deep that not even the transformation into a cursed spirit could erase it. Or perhaps it was something more, something that neither of them could yet comprehend.
As Uraume followed behind, carrying Sayako's fragile form, they noticed the subtle tension in Sukuna's posture, the way his steps were just a fraction slower than usual. They said nothing, but the weight of their silence was heavy. They knew better than to question their master, but the significance of this encounter was not lost on them.
Sukuna's mind raced as he led the way out of the cave, the cold night air biting against his skin as they emerged into the open. The twisted smirk that had once graced his lips was gone, replaced by a hard, contemplative expression. He wouldn't allow this woman to weaken him- he couldn't. But as the wind whispered through the trees, carrying with it the distant echoes of memories he had long forgotten, Sukuna couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something far more profound than he could have ever anticipated.
