Sayako's eyes fluttered open, and the world around her slowly came into focus. The room was warm, bathed in the gentle glow of the afternoon sun. The soft sounds of rustling fabric and whispered voices filled the air. She blinked, trying to make sense of her surroundings, her body aching in places she didn't even know could ache.
As she laid there, she became aware of the maids bustling around her, their hands moving deftly as they changed the bandages on her chest and back. Sayako groaned slightly, the pain from her injuries reminding her of the fierce battle she had barely survived.
"Oh, look! Lady Sayako is awake!" one of the younger maids whispered excitedly, her eyes wide with awe.
"Shush! Do you want to get us all killed?" hissed an older maid, clearly the voice of reason among the group. The younger maid immediately clamped her mouth shut, looking like she had just been caught gossiping about the emperor himself.
Sayako tried to sit up, but a sharp pain in her side quickly put an end to that idea. She winced and sank back into the pillows. "Where... where am I?" she asked, her voice raspier than she expected.
One of the maids, a sprightly young woman with a mischievous glint in her eye, leaned in close. "You're in sukuna-sama's shrine," she said, her tone suggesting that this was the juiciest piece of gossip she had ever delivered.
Sayako's eyebrows shot up, her surprise almost making her forget the pain. "Sukuna? As in the Sukuna?"
Another maid, older and with the air of someone who had seen it all, nodded solemnly. "Yes, my lady. You were found unconscious after your battle with the thunder beast. Sukuna-sama himself brought you here."
Sayako stared at the maids, her mind racing to catch up with what they were telling her. Sukuna? The same Sukuna from her past? The one who had become the most feared King of Curses in history? And he had brought her here? Gently? The idea seemed so ridiculous that she nearly laughed.
The younger maid couldn't resist adding more fuel to the fire. "He was so concerned about you, Lady Sayako! We've never seen him like this- so... gentle!"
Sayako blinked in disbelief, her brain short-circuiting at the image of Sukuna being anything remotely gentle. "Are we talking about the same Sukuna? You know, the one who slices people in half for fun?"
The maids giggled, clearly enjoying this once-in-a-lifetime chance to gossip about the terrifying king of curses sukuna. The older maid, the one who had scolded the younger earlier, patted Sayako's hand with surprising tenderness. "But it's true, my lady. He's been.... different since you arrived. Even the way he looks at you is different." { Beta reader: the way they're treating someone who JUST WOKE UP is not right let her calm down first like?? }
Sayako's curiosity was piqued, but she wasn't sure if she was more intrigued or utterly terrified. "Can I speak to him?"
The maids exchanged glances, their excitement barely contained. "We'll go fetch him right away!" they chimed in unison, one of them practically sprinting out of the room to find Uraume.
Meanwhile, Sukuna was sitting on his throne, brooding as usual. The news that Sayako wanted to see him was relayed to him with the seriousness of a court decree. His first reaction was a mixture of curiosity and irritation, but there was something else too- a faint, almost imperceptible sense of.... relief? He stood up with a low growl, his large form moving with predatory grace as he made his way to the room where Sayako was resting. { Beta reader: god at least change your form before you go, your ugly like this }
