The walk to school was boring as usual, with Oscar going on about how Harper got special treatment.
"For fuck's sake, why are you so jealous?" Harper mumbled, looking down at her feet as they approached the school gates.
Oscar froze and hesitated.
"I'm not jealous-"
"Clearly you are!" Harper huffed.
"Whatever, mate.." Oscar grumbled as he quickly walked into Truham. Harper sighed and made her way into Higgs. Harper was just given a new form group as well.. Great.
She entered the classroom and greeted the teacher. She was then giving her seating plan. She was sat next to a girl she never met, but heard about; Ivy Hope. Ivy was the daughter of Ben Hope and his wife. Harper knew this, but didn't think much of it. Out of all the stories her dad Charlie told, he never mentioned Ben, who just happened to be his shitbag of an ex boyfriend.
Harper gripped her backpack a little tighter as she made her way to the seat with Ivy. After a once-over, admiring her features, Harper concluded this about Ivy's looks: She had tan skin, but it was such a shade of golden brown that Harper was sure her skin was glowing. Ivy's hair was obsidian black, just like her father's, and her eyes looked like they could hypnotize someone if they stared too long.
"Hi." Harper said when she plopped down in her seat.
"Hi." Ivy replied in a somewhat monotone voice, looking Harper up and down.
"I'm- Harper. " She smiled, putting her bag next to her seat.
"Ivy Hope." She shrugged, now spinning a pencil between her long fingers.
"Nice to meet you." Harper smiled.
Ivy gave two glares to Harper and nodded.
Harper's smile faded, and she furrowed her brow. Her head snapped up when the teacher started talking.
When the clock striked 12 and lunch rolled around, Harper sat with her friends that she had made in previous years at Higgs. Those friends included Aurora Heany, Imogen's daughter, Bea Xu, Tao and Elle's daughter, and Jessie Jones, Tara and Darcy's daughter. It wasn't many, but it was enough for her.
"What are you looking at?" Rory scoffed after taking a bite of her sandwich she had for lunch.
"More like who." Jessie said with a roll of her eyes.
"I was looking at Ivy. I sit next to her in form. She's.. Interesting? I dunno." Harper shrugged, knowing better than to lie to her friends.
"She is, isn't she?" Rory observed, glancing in the girl's direction.
"She's scary." Jessie said.
"She's not scary." Harper quickly defended, rolling her eyes.
"Jessie's a worrywart." Rory smirked, giving Jessie a small shove.
"Am not!" Jessie protested with a chuckle.
"You are!"
"You're such a twat!"
"Don't call me a twat!"
"Oh my God, shut up.." Harper groaned.
"Sorry! Damn!" Jessie giggled.
"Hello, lovelies.." The sound of a soft voice came out. It was Beatrice Xu.
"Hi- oh my fuck, your hair!" Harper exclaimed, smiling.
"What?" Bea said.
"The curls." Harper said.
"They're stunning. You're stunning." Rory said, smiling.
"Oh.. Thanks." Bea blushed, her hair bouncing as she sat.
"You should wear it like that more often.." Rory said. Jessie smirked and whispered something to Rory, to which Jessie earned a shove from her.
After lunch, Harper was on her way back to her last period. While walking, she spotted Ivy. Then it was like Harper's mouth moved and spoke without her brain commanding it.
"Hi."
Ivy looked back at Harper, her eyes dark as ever.
"Hi." She replied simply as she walked away. Harper silently cursed herself for being so awkward.
Maths class was hell for Harper. Quite unfortunately, she had taken Nick's knowledge of math, and Oscar took Charlie's brains. An eternity later, school was let out. Harper bolted out of there as quick as her feet would let her. Due to her intense speed, she of course bumped into none other than Ivy.
"Shit, I'm sorry! Oh.. Hi." Harper smiled softly when she realized who it was.
Ivy gave the girl a quick glance up and down.
"Hi." She said, giving an awkward smile before she went on her way. Harper sighed and walked out of the school gates and over to the benches to wait for Oscar.
After a bit, Harper felt a tap on her shoulder.
"Let's go." Oscar stated simply.
"Bad day?" Harper asked as she got off the bench and followed her brother.
"Yes, kinda." Ossy sighed. "No, I don't want to talk about it." He finished before his sister could get a word in.
"Hmff. I had a good day. Except for math."
"Oh, sis. You think that's hard? Wait til you're in my year. It's absolute hell, even for me. And you know, like, I'm a math pro." Oscar said, shrugging.
"Yes, I know you're 'like a math pro'" Harper imitated.
"Don't get sassy with me." Oscar said.
"I'm not getting sassy with you!"
"Yes you are. I'll tell dads you're being a twat."
"I'm not being a twat! I haven't done anything!" Harper scoffed in disbelief.
"Whatever. Piss off." Oscar grumbled as he walked ahead, making it extremely difficult for Harper to catch up.
"What did I even do.." Harper mumbled to herself as she eventually approached the street they lived on. Her brother was already well inside the house now. Harper finally gripped the knob and opened the door.
