The ride went silent after they left the restaurant. A few minutes later, he stopped the car in front of a shoe store, got out, and walked into the store. She followed him, feeling confused.
"Why are we here?" she asked.
"Because we forgot to have dessert after dinner, so I thought I'd get it here," he replied.
"we eat dessert at the store?" she asked.
"Yes, why not?"
"Isn't everyone here to buy shoes?"
"When you know everything, why are you asking me these questions, Ava?" he said, not looking at her as he searched for a good pair of shoes.
Her face fell into a pout, the corners of her mouth turning downward as she glared at the floor.
"What type of shoes are you looking for, Sir?" the sales associate asked.
"I'm not sure. Just suggest something good," he replied, still focused on the shoes.
"Would you like to try this pair? It's a couple's set," he offered.
He glanced at them and nodded in approval.
"Yeah, Sure"
"Okay, sir. Let me help you with the fitting."
"Go ahead and try these," he said, handing her the shoes.
"What, me?" she asked, pointing to herself.
"Is someone else here besides you?" he replied, avoiding eye contact.
"We're buying a couple's pair?" she asked, hoping for a positive answer.
"Who said we're buying another pair? We're only getting these for you," he said.
"Only for me? But why?"
"You ask too many questions, Ava. Just go and try them on," he said, still avoiding her gaze.
They bought only one pair. She was happy, as it was the first gift her husband had ever given her. She would have been even happier if he had bought a pair for himself too, but for now, this one pair was enough for her.
They settled comfortably into the car, and he started the engine.
"You didn't tell me why you bought these shoes for me," she asked again.
"Your heels were causing you discomfort. Don't think I bought them because I care about you personally; I just want you to perform your best at work. The more comfortable you are, the better you'll be able to focus," he explained.
She listened silently.
"Now, mind telling me your address? It's already very late," he said.
"But don't you think it's unprofessional if I wear these shoes in the office?" she asked, avoiding his question.
"No, it's not. I own this building everything here belongs to me. Tell me if anyone bothers you, I'll handle it. Now, enough chit chat and tell me your address will you?" he insisted.
She gave him her address, and twenty minutes later, they were standing in front of her apartment.
"You live here? The area doesn't seem good for you," he said, concerned.
"It's not that bad. The rent is affordable, and for now, it's the best I can manage," she replied with a long breath.
"Okay, then. Goodbye, and thank you so much for today," she said, heading towards her apartment building. He watched her until she disappeared inside, then left himself.
After a while, he found himself back at the shoe store, where he bought another pair of shoes.
He threw the shopping bag onto the back seat of his car, he couldn't help but mutter to himself,"What the hell is happening to me? Why did I buy these? Oh my God, I'm going to lose my mind," he said, pulling at his hair in frustration. He started the car and drove toward his house.
A Little by little, he had fallen for her, enchanted by her presence, without even realizing who she truly was.
