"Mom why are you eating so quickly?" Adina asked as she and her boyfriend Adam stared at Evelyn from across the dinner table.Evelyn had been invited to Dianna's house to have Christmas and she was excited about it. There hadn't been a child in the house since Dianna was a child, and tonight she'd get the chance to meet the one Dianna had taken in. What she didn't know was that Taraji was kin to the man who'd shot her over a year ago. The same man who'd left her traumatized and the reason behind her needing an emotional support dog.
"I'm having dinner at Dianna's place. It's a little after 8 and I feel like I'm already late for it." Evelyn dabbed the sides of her mouth before getting up from the table.
Adina had fallen silent at the mention of Dianna's name. Her boyfriend Adam brought his glass of wine to his mouth and downed the rest of it. He'd been dating Adina for seven months and he knew that she had a daughter she was estranged from. He didn't know the details surrounding why or that Dianna was transgender. The photos he saw of her around the house were photos of her after transitioning. Adina and Evelyn had always respected Dianna enough not to have photos of her as a baby or any other photos that'd make people ask questions about the young man in those photos. Dianna didn't like to see old photos of herself and be reminded that she wasn't born in a body she felt she should've been in.
"Lord where are my keys?" Evelyn patted her pockets as her dog Keena came running into the dining room. She was a Pekingese who'd been with Evelyn for about a year now for emotional support. Evelyn struggled through the days at times after the shooting, but Keena helped get her through them most times. Evelyn didn't leave the house as much as she used to especially at night so Adina was shocked when she'd mentioned earlier that she was "hitting the streets" tonight. When she'd asked her where she planned on going and Evelyn told her she was spending some of Christmas with Dianna, Adina dropped the conversation.
Keena stared up at Evelyn and wagged her tail, waiting for her to find what she was looking for.
"I'll drive you Miss Evelyn." Adam stood.
"No. No. I'm alright dear. You stay here." Evelyn looked around before heading out of the dining room to look for her keys. Keena chased behind her. Though there hadn't been a child in the house since Dianna was little, Keena seemed to be filling in that position because everywhere Evelyn went she was right behind her.
"Well ma if you're driving in the dark I really think you should at least let Adam drive you." Adina followed too.
"Mm." Evelyn said. "That's a damn shame. You so bitter it bothers you to even volunteer to take me over to your child's house. You'll have Adam drive me instead. A man Dianna doesn't know. Why would she want someone she doesn't know to have her new address after what she went through?" Evelyn placed her hand on her hip as she turned around to face Adina who'd rolled her eyes up to the ceiling.
