Welp, who would've thought that this story got this much attention?
Which; Thank you guys, for appreciating and loving this story from beginning to end!
10K Might not seem like a lot compared to the Millions of reads other fanfics have on this platform, but for me it does!
I remember the first 100 views and me getting all giggly about it, because there were other people reading my work! Awesome!
And because I think this is quite a milestone for me, I wanted to celebrate a little.
So here's a short scene from before the guys met either Chan nor Mimu. Before they moved into their seventh apartment and managed to be just as unruly as they always be.
Enjoy this bonus:
↢_______.-._____.~*☾*~._____.-._______↣
Squeak!"Mouse! Mouse! There's a mouse!"
Felix is practically standing on top of their coffee table with one leg lifted up while he's frantically pointing at something moving around in their apartment.
"What do you mean there's a— WHAH!" Changbin is joining him on the table and the specific piece of furniture is cracking suspiciously under the combined weight of the two people on top of it.
"That was the most undogly scream I've heard in all of my life," Seungmin deadpans whilst walking out of the kitchen with a bowl of noodles in his hands, not even flinching when the small, gray creature skirts past his feet and disappears behind the corner.
"WELL SORRY, OKAY!" Changbin hollers at him, slowly releasing the tight grip he has on his owner. "There's enough rodents in this place already and I told you before I'm not fond of them!"
"You know I'm not a rodent, right?" Jeongin scoffs offended whilst stealing the bowl out of Seungmin's hands and walking to their dinner table. "Thanks, hyung," he devilishly smiles at Seungmin who sighs and returns to the kitchen to prepare another bowl.
Felix stares at him for both the eagerness to educate his friend that a Jackdaw is all but family of rodents and for not being murdered on the spot, but Jeongin just shrugs and replies in between bites; "He slammed the door in my face this morning again." As if that gives good enough of an explanation why the youngster could steal other people's food.
"Innie... This is exactly why there's pests in the house," Felix whines when he sees how sloppy Jeongin slurps on his noodle and manages to spill some on the floor.
"You mean snake boy?" Minho stretches out whilst yawning, clearly just woken up from his nap in Felix's room.
He's already smirking when they hear an indignant 'Hey!' from out of the bathroom and not a second later Hyunjin yelling; "I'm not a snake, I'm a—,"
"Relatives of the lizard family," they all sigh in unison, some of them even rolling their eyes.
"And what's so bad about an extra guest in our home?" Hyunjin follows up, hair still damp from his shower, clearly not impressed by his housemates clearly taking the piss with him.
Felix sighs, thanking Changbin gracefully for helping him off the coffee table whilst anxiously checking to see if he can spot said 'extra guest'.
"May I remind you about not liking that cicada living in your terrarium last year?"
Hyunjin scrunches his nose and unconsciously pulls on his earlobes thinking back to his not so wanted terrarium visitor who refused to shut his gut when Han jokingly had set that thing free in his bedroom. Han kept saying Hyunjin should eat it if he didn't like his new friend since he's sort of a lizard, but Hyunjin kept pointing out that that 'thing' was almost as big as his head! Even if he wanted at some point to swallow that thing whole, his jaws wouldn't flex out enough. Also...He secretly felt intimidated by the cicada staring through his soul from the opposite side of his terrarium, but you didn't hear him admit that out loud. Eventually Felix had to gather all of his human strength to overcome his fear to grab that thing and yeet it out of their room. Sayonara, chirping soulcrusher...
"You handled that pretty well though?" Hyunjin smiles shyly at Felix.
"I'm just not fond of skittering animals who tend to scare the shit out of me when I least expect it," Felix sighs. "Having six of you around is more than enough. Han is the only exception I tolerate."
"Tsk, favoritism," he hears Minho hiss under his breath.
Felix frowns at him and puts on his biggest puppy look to get his archangel to grant his wish when he says; "But I would gladly let you be my favorite if you just scare that eenie weenie tiny mouse out of our house?"
Minho lets out a haughty laugh at that while he crosses his arms and Felix grumbles, already knowing he lost that battle.
"That is way above my pay grade," the Russian Blue huffs with a smile, observing his overly clean and pedicured nails.
"You don't even have a job!" Hyunjin huffs back at him, taking the obvious bait.
Minho smirks and squints his eyes at Hyunjin who visibly recoils and skitters out of the room to the kitchen.
"See? I have the most important job in the world," Minho smiles. "Keeping you bunch on your toes."
Felix does want to reprimand him that that is certainly not a job besides it being hella annoying now he knows Hyunjin will probably hole himself up in the kitchen until Minho's asleep again in fear of... Whatever Minho conveyed with that one look, but before he can tell him to stop pestering the others, they hear; "My nuts!"
Jeongin splurts his half finished broth from his noodles over the table hearing the words while Han has the audacity to yell back; "Which ones?"
Which makes Felix frown at him while the hamster hybrid shrugs and says; "Could be the food, could be his balls, gotta know, ya know?"
A stomping Seungmin comes out of the kitchen, holding a brown paper bag in his hands which clearly has seen better days.
Felix recognizes it as Seungmin's favorite snack back which he uses to store in his preferred snacks whenever Felix has money enough to buy them some. The bag has his name on it so that the others can't accidentally mistake it from their other foods for communal usage and Seungmin is really picky and meticulous when he lets himself have some.
Unlike some of his gobblers without self restraint for snacks. Cough, cough, Changbin and Han.
Seungmin is pouting when he shows Felix the gaping hole on the bottom of it, seemingly made with small, specific bitemarks and Felix shivers whilst retracting his hand from touching it.
"Well, that's another reason I don't want this new housemate," he nags. "Min, go wash your hands and dispose of it in the trash bag. Yes I know it's your holy snack bag. I promise to buy you a new one after my shift."
Well, not a paper bag, he thinks. Maybe a plastic container now he knows the new house mouse has found their food.
Seungmin is cursing under his breath while he stomps back to the kitchen to do as he is told while Changbin has grabbed some tissues out of Hyunjin's backpack to wipe away the mess Jeongin made. Probably out of fear it will lure the mouse back into the living room.
"Minho, can you please, please, please do something about it now it has gotten to the food?" Felix begs his cat hybrid who huffs and gets up from his comfortable spot on the couch.
"I will charge you for this," he stretches out whilst beginning to remove his shirt and sweats.
Felix clasps his hands together in a praying way while Minho changes into his cat form and walks off to where the mouse was seen last.
"You think he'll eat it?" Han quips from his stolen spot where Minho resided just a minute ago.
"Don't say that!" Changbin whines, looking up from holding Jeongin in a chokehold from wiping the Jackdaw's face. "He'll puke up some nasty hairball or something and I'm not cleaning that up like last time!"
Jisung giggles while Felix shivers again, all too happy he didn't have to witness that particularly graphic idea.
Speaking of cleaning stuff...
"Uwoh... Now I have to clean out the pantry,' he whines, glancing over at the clock. "I know for sure one of you is dumb enough to think those tiny brown specks are chocolate sprinkles or something or tiny bugs they can lick up and I am not willing to bring you to a vet for another ridiculous bill for something stupid and unnecessary. HYUNJIN! JEONGIN! OUT OF THE KITCHEN, NOW!"
The human is already bolting off even though he had been squirming like a little girl from the small gray rodent in their home, but apparently the idea of losing more money because of his idiot friends brought a new sense of urgency defining the fear of stepping onto a mouse.
"I'm not even in the kitchen..." Jeongin pouts, absentmindedly playing with his chopsticks in his bowl which Changbin plucks out of his grasp with the fear of spilling more stuff.
Han is observing this all whilst wiggling comfortably in the heap of clothes left by Minho. On one hand he feels sorry for the little gray mouse to be met with the fearsome gray cat, understanding that wanting a warm place with easy accessible food is something every animal craves for deep down in their tiny hearts. But he can understand that their human isn't a big fan of sharing food with someone who's less capable of using real communication to ask for it or using opposable thumbs to open packaging instead of chewing through it and shitting in it at the same time.
He once had to retort to those options -well, minus the shitting where you eat...- when he was still out on the streets, before he became part of the Rodent patrol. He'd been weak and alone and not all humans tended to keep their homes as tidy. Especially old or mentally sick people were easy targets to steal some crumbs from. Yeah... not his proudest moments, but he had to survive and trying to find food on the streets had been way too dangerous with the amount of predatory animals lurking around every corner. Breaking into people's houses was way safer if you knew how to stay out of sight.
"HE BIT ME!"
Han shakes out of his memories from the loud clunking coming out of the kitchen, followed up with three of his housemates to flee the scene with trembling limbs and quick feet.
"The thing bit me!" Minho yells whilst hiding fully naked behind Changbin who had stiffened up next to Jeongin who curiously tilted his head at all the commotion.
He's holding a hand over his nose and stares with shaking pupils at the doorway to the kitchen as if the culprit would walk out of there any minute.
"There! There!" Felix points at a flash of fluff running away while Hyunjin just spurts the opposite way instead of chasing it.
"I'm not negotiating with that thing!" the Slow Worm yells. "He bit Minho!"
They are frantically running around each other while Seungmin walks in with Felix's phone pointed at them.
"not the moment to film!" Changbin hollers at him, but Seungmin can only double over from laughing while the other three make a scene.
"Yor noodles are overboiling," Jeongin mentions casually whilst following a running Minho and Hyunjin while Felix follows with a bandaid flailing in the air. "Stop running and let me check! Get here Minho!"
Han sighs and stares at where he sees the small rodent disappear behind their fridge. Maybe this is a task for a rodent like himself.
While the others are busy with their own problems, he transforms into his hamsterform and easily zigzags through their stomping feet with his supreme ninja skills. Duh. He's been trained to maneuver through crowds without getting as flat as a pancake. He's skilled!
Well, except for that one time... Okay, he's getting off track.
Oof... When was the last time he had to wriggle himself in such a small space? Did he become fat? Ugh! No! Nonsense, he's too fluffy and cute to get fat. Even when he has eaten nothing but buttercreme snacks from Jeongin's snacks. Shhhht! Nobody needs to know!
It takes a while to locate where the other rodent has hid himself, but he finds him behind the kitchen cabinets in the corner. It's washing its face and whiskers whilst its eyes glint up in the dark. Good thing his own eyesight is just as good in the dim lit space.
Uh... hi?, he tries, not literally speaking, but more by waving his tiny claw. Nice...spot you found?
The mouse is looking at him, but not paying much attention, just continuously stroking his snout with its front claws.
You know, I get that you're pretty cozy and all in here, but my human doesn't really appreciate unannounced guests, he tries again. Hmmm, what should he do? Ah, food. That's why it's here in the first place, right?
Han skitters towards the fridge again, watching over his shoulder if the rodent is following him. It does, but probably only because that's what rodents do in the wild. They follow others, because when we work together we get better! Totally not a Hamtaro the TV show quote.
Han manages to climb up on some loose hanging wallpaper behind the fridge -just doubting his weight gain for a second when one of the pieces sags under him a little- and manages himself on top of the overhead cabinets in the kitchen with the gray mouse following in his footsteps. Well, at least someone had no troubles holding up on that wallpaper without tearing it any further. Hah! He sasses in his own head, secretly envying the sleeker build of the other rodent.
Look, if we go down here... He hates nibbling on stuff that's not food! But he does so by biting a bit of the chipwood away when he feels how he can't just jump headfirst through the hole he had chewn a couple of months prior when Felix decided to put a kiddy lock on this cabinet because he and Changbin had raided it in a fury of sugar madness. Not fat! I tell you!
He plops himself not so graciously down the hole onto the first shelf and waddles over to the first bag of crisps he sees.
Now, look. If I give you something that will keep you filled for quite some time you can go find another place to call home. Chippies are high in calories and very filling, so you'll feel all energized and ready to walk a mile or two again. There's a nice bakery down the street, you know? Plenty of bread gets thrown away every evening and if you just avoid playing in their flour bags you can get lots of croissant flakes people spill on the floor in the shop or right outside of the shop. I know, because sometimes Felix has to overwork and we'll have to wait for dinner which is expensive, so then I'll sneak out for a bit to just fill up my cravings there instead of draining his wallet.
Han rambles off about great places he used to visit before he found Felix and his family while he uses his feet to press against the closure clip whilst holding the other part between his front claws. The clip slowly comes undone and Han rummages inside to find a sizable sized crisp to hand over to the mouse.
The mouse blinks a few times at him, snagging the crisp out of his hands to sniff it before chomping off some before holding it in its mouth and running off.
Ah, no problem! Han smiles when he thinks that the other has taken his advice. Well shit... how am I supposed to get back up there?
After some time and a way too smug smirk on his face, telling his friends he took care of their mouse problem, he sits himself proudly on the couch, snuggling into Changbins pelt and waiting for Seungmin to bring them all drinks.
Felix has been off to work, probably arriving back somewhere in the early hours and the others deciding on a movie night without unwanted guests stealing their popcorn.
They hadn't questioned him how he got rid of the mouse, telling them he just 'took matters into his own hands' and not to 'worry' about it anymore.
Minho had squinted his eyes at him, but Han wasn't that impressed with the blatant stare, finding it rather amusing Minho took offense that he managed to do what he couldn't. Evident to the pink bandaid slapped over the bridge of his nose.
After their movie -with Changbin frantically cleaning each and every bit of leftover popcorn and vacuum cleaning Jeongin from top to bottom even though he fears that machine- they decided to call it a night and go to bed.
Han even helped Seungmin with tucking the blanket over his cage and flick off the lights in the living room so Changbin could stay cozy on the couch before he climbed up on the dining table to let himself into his own enclosure and wiggle around in the sawdust bits until he was comfortable. Ah... the sweet, sweet spot to chill down and end their day.
"What's that?"
Felix isn't so sure what he hears when he arrives home around five in the morning. Most of his hybrids have the tendencies to make weird noises from time to time, but that applied to them being awake and often fussy about something or at each other. Besides the low snoring of Changbin on the couch, it's normally dead silent when he arrives back from work.
But this morning he hears... scratching? Rustling? He can't pinpoint it.
Not too brave on his own -especially when he thinks back to his not so brave encounter with that mouse last midday- he walks over to his room to shake Minho awake.
He knows the Russian blue isn't the happiest with rudely being awoken out of his sleep, but he's the one going the easiest without much of it as he naps throughout the whole day either way. "What?" he groans, transformed into his human form with his head reaching out from under Felix's blankets.
"I hear something," Felix whispers.
"Then wake the others. If one of them sleep talks, just smack them."
Felix scoffs, knowing there's only one person in this household blabbering the whole night together whilst being unconscious in human form and it's the man he's staring at right now.
"I can't. Hyunjin takes ages to wake up, Jeongin will make more noise on his own and you know Seungmin will be a grumpy hassle when we wake him up midway through his sleep."
"So? Changbin's on the couch and Hannie is the bravest if we believe him after last night," Minho mumbles, already turning around to snuggle up on Felix's pillow.
Felix grabs him by the shoulder, shaking him again with a low whine and pleading eyes.
"Please, Min. I already asked Changbin, but he's cowering on the couch, refusing to let his feet touch the ground in the dark. We can wake up Han together."
Finally the Archangel gives in, sitting up and grinning when Felix comes eye to eye with his private parts.
Nothing new there, all of them walk naked around more often than Felix likes, but that doesn't mean he needs to be greeted with Minho's... worm... hanging in front of his nose.
"Ash, get clothed," Felix grumbles when Minho dares to moon him by scooting out backwards out of his bed, making it more than clear this is his way of revenge for making him wake up this early.
"Okay, okay, now what sound were you talking about," Minho whispers when they both set out in the living room again where Changbin is holding his own tail in between his mouth and fearfully looks up at them.
"Pff, coward," Minho scoffs at the sight, but Changbin ignores it when he perks up his ears again.
So he can hear it too.
So does Minho who turns his head towards the kitchen and points at it.
Felix shrugs, not having that good of an hearing as a human compared to his hybrids and simply stating that he could hear those noises when he came home.
"It's coming out of the top cabinet," Minho whispers, tiptoeing into the kitchen with Felix clutched onto his arm with the flashlight of his phone lighting up the space. Mainly for himself as Minho has perfect sight in the dark.
"You think Han has accidentally closed himself in again?" Felix whispers, checking the child lock on it, but seeing nothing out of the ordinary.
For a second the sounds stop and Minho dares to scoff a little. "Pf, as if he can hear us, that sneaky little bastard."
That lock was there for a reason. Reason one; Han and his cravings for fatty or over sugary food.
"Should I open it?" Felix whispered back, not sure of what to do.
"Well duh. I can't open it!" Minho sassed back.
Even if they're hybrids, some of them can be rather stupid for not knowing their human forms could easily flick off the lock with just a twist of the fingers, Felix thinks to himself. He blinks at Minho and holds up his hands, grabbing Minho's as well to show him his working digits, but the cat hybrid isn't getting it, so Felix sighs and flicks off the child lock himself.
"Okay, Han. You're buster. No more nightsn—,"
Minho's words never manage to finish when they're met with two black, pearly eyes staring at them. And then another pair. And another...
Minho gulps seeing his arch enemy in multiple places and Felix does a double take when he sees the open bag of Chips.
Their synchronized, guttural screams wake up the whole neighborhood for sure.
"Run!"
And that's how they lost their fifth house within a few months. The place being infested with mice all thanks to a not so smart Han who showed them the way to the best snack in the world to survive on which made the little pests energized enough to multiply within a month and overrun the building within weeks.
The landlord kicked them out for ruining his property and forbid them to ever rent in this neighborhood again.
Han got house arrest as soon as they moved into their sixth home and there was a ban on chips for a good four months. That was until Chan joined their little family and showed them how to deal with unwanted guests in their house. Only then the salty snack could make its comeback.
Still, Minho got paranoid every time Felix came back with a bag of chips sitting in his shopping bags, so they never left a bag unfinished anymore.
At least Felix learned to deal with overcoming his fears with crawly animals real quick!
The end.
