behind the smile

"You look so pretty, your smile's so bright,"
they say as I nod, holding my hurt tight.
"Why would you be sad? You're lovely and calm,"
they think peace lives here, where there's only harm.

"You're overthinking," they laugh and tease,
but inside, I'm breaking piece by piece.
I wear my smile like a shield each day,
hiding the parts that have faded away.

Don't we all at some point in our life just wear a smile instead of talking about why we're sad?
I see you.
I hope my poem connected with you, and made you feel seen 🫂
