The music thumped through the air, filling the well-decorated backyard with an infectious energy. Laughter mingled with chatter as drinks and hors d'oeuvres made the rounds, the guests lost in the rhythm of the night.

Avery and Sarah snuck a few drinks, giggling as they swayed to the beat. Avery would've invited Kie to join them, but she knew Kie held a strong distaste for her Kook best friend.

After an emotional reunion with Pope, JJ made his way toward the dance area, where he had seen  Avery with Sarah. His plan was straightforward : deliver a note to Sarah.

But as he approached, Mister Dunleavy intercepted him, asking for a drink since he was dressed as a waiter. When JJ looked back, Sarah had already been whisked away by her sister, leaving Avery to dance with the others. Cursing under his breath, he weaved through the crowd, making his way to her.

Avery swayed to the music, the warm light catching her glowing dark skin. Her pale yellow dress hugged her curves, and the flower crown perched atop her perfectly curled hair added a whimsical charm. For someone he'd often seen in pajamas, she looked stunning.

As she danced, she unknowingly bumped into him, and he gently gripped her arm, pulling her away from the crowd, "JJ?" She gasped.

"Yep." He pressed a finger to his lips, playfully urging her to keep quiet.

"What?" She blinked, taken aback for a moment - partly because he was here at Midsummers, but also due to the state of his face. The last time she'd seen him, he had a laceration on his lip and a bruise around his eye, but now it looked worse. "What happened to your face? Did Shoupe do this?"

JJ twirled her around, keeping her close with his hands on her hips as they dance. "Oh, this? This, no. This is - it's my dad. You know? Has that right jab." He tried to chuckle, but it felt hollow.

"That looks like more than a jab, Maybank."

"It's nothin' that hasn't happened before." He glanced away, taking one of his hands off her hip to grab a piece of paper from his pocket. "Anyway, I don't have time for pleasantries. I got this note from Vlad to Val. You know where she went?"

Avery furrowed her brow, confusion swirling within her. "Vlad? Val? Who the hell are you talking about?"

He rolled his eyes, twirling her again as they danced back to back for a second. He turned her back towards him swiftly, "Sarah - Val. I gotta get this to her, like now." His urgency was palpable, and she nodded, sensing the weight of the moment.

"Okay, uh, yeah. Give it to me and I'll make sure she gets it."

"Great," He sighed in relief, handing her the note, "Good to see you, princess." He bowed slightly, and she rolled her eyes before turning to find Sarah. JJ watched her walk away, a fleeting smile on his face, until Rafe Cameron stepped into his path.
