The air inside the courtroom was thick with tension, heavy and stifling. The sun outside blazed, its rays seeping through the windows, adding a layer of warmth that only made the room feel even more uncomfortable. Avery's skin stuck to the bench as she sat between Sarah and Kie. The hard wood beneath her seemed to amplify her anxiety, each creak of the bench a reminder of the overwhelming weight pressing down on her chest. She couldn't shake the sick feeling in her stomach, the knot that seemed to tighten with every passing second.

Behind them, JJ and Pope were visibly agitated, their legs bouncing nervously as they waited. Each of them had tried to come up with a plan, something—anything—that would keep John B from facing the worst possible fate. But now, they were forced to sit in a cold silence, helpless.

"John Booker Routledge, pursuant to the North Carolina statute section 14, you are charged with murder in the first degree with aggravated circumstances. If convicted, the maximum sentence would be the death penalty."

The words rang out like a death knell in the quiet room, the finality of it sinking deep into Avery's bones. The courtroom erupted into a chorus of gasps, murmurs, and heated discussions. But Avery, frozen, couldn't tear her gaze away from the floor. She couldn't even bring herself to look at Sarah, whose shoulders shook with silent tears beside her. It was all too much to bear. Too much to take in.

"Your Honor, he's 17!" JJ's voice broke through the turmoil, loud and desperate. His frustration was evident, and Avery could feel the tremble in his voice as he stood, his fists clenched at his sides. His chest heaved as if he couldn't contain the emotions spilling over anymore. "He's 17! Are you kidding me?"

Avery instinctively reached out, her hand pressing gently against his chest, urging him to sit back down, but the anger in his eyes was undeniable. His fury wasn't just for John B—it was for everything they had been through, everything they'd lost. It was hard for any of them to believe this was their reality.

Pope, the one always trying to keep the peace, moved closer to help keep JJ grounded. "JJ, it's okay. We need to stay calm," he said softly, though his own voice lacked the conviction he needed to reassure anyone.

The officers began escorting John B out of the courtroom, and Sarah rushed forward, calling out to him. "We'll figure it out, John B! We'll figure it out," she pleaded, but her words were swallowed by the distance between them. Kie was right behind Sarah, yelling at the guards, her voice full of frustration. Avery's heart ached at the helplessness of it all. No matter how much they fought, it never seemed like enough.

Her mind raced as she reached out to JJ, her hand finding his. She didn't have the words to comfort him, didn't have any solutions to offer. All she had was her presence, hoping it would be enough.
