The next day, the news broke that the five teenagers had returned to Kildare, alongside a very alive John Routledge. Sheriff Shoupe's speech about their arrival was ironic—Avery wasn't sure if it was deliberate or just his usual style, but it grated on her nerves. She didn't need the attention, didn't want it. She wanted things to settle. But with everything happening—the stress with her parents, the weight of Rafe's return—it felt like nothing was going to settle.

The thought of Rafe, of his voice echoing the last words he said to her, kept looping in her mind. She couldn't shake the image of him helping her, his actions still lingering in her thoughts like an unresolved question. How could she feel so conflicted about someone who, just days ago, had been part of her escape? But he was still Rafe—volatile, dangerous Rafe—and now he was back on the island. His presence was a dark cloud hanging over everything.

"When I went back to Tannyhill, Rafe was on the phone with Ward, and he just kept saying, 'My thing, this is my thing.' He had to be talking about the cross." Sarah explained.

They were all sitting outside the little makeshift garage at the Château, but it didn't feel like a moment of peace. It felt like a pressure cooker about to blow.

"Absolutely," Pope said, voice low, agreeing with Sarah's assessment.

"And he's coming into Wilmington tonight at eight o'clock. It's being shipped by train to Raleigh from there, but this is our chance to get it back," Sarah continued, her voice thick with determination, but Avery couldn't join in. Her thoughts kept drifting back to Rafe. What if they ran into him? What if she saw him again—faced him face to face?

"You get any other information?" Pope's question cut through her spiraling thoughts, but Avery barely registered it.

Kie grabbed a piece of paper. "Uh, Sarah got the cargo number." Her fingers flipped through the paper quickly, her brow furrowed as she scanned the information.

"Okay, well, that's a start," Pope commented, but Avery wasn't hearing him. Her head was still swirling with the image of Rafe—his voice, the way he looked at her, the way he had helped her escape, and the lingering sense of betrayal he must have felt afterward. She didn't know what to make of it. And now, it was a problem. Because he was back. On the island. And she couldn't shake the fear that he would find her—find her and pull her into whatever chaos he was plotting.

"They're definitely fencing that shit off as we speak. So we should probably get a move on," JJ's voice snapped her back to the present. His words held an edge of urgency that cut through her fog, and she quickly pushed away any doubts she had. There was no time for hesitation, no time for second-guessing. They were in this. All of them.

"Sarah, you hear from John B?" Pope asked, looking between the group. The sense of urgency was palpable now—everyone knew they needed the Twinkie to make this plan work, and if they didn't get it, their chances of pulling it off were slim.
