Rain began to pour over the Outer Banks, a relentless downpour that seemed to mirror the tension hanging in the air. The sound of water slapping against the pavement filled the night, creating a heavy backdrop as the teenagers rushed towards their meeting location, hearts pounding with a mixture of anticipation and dread. The air was thick with moisture, cold but humid, making the skin prickle uncomfortably. Avery's breath came in shallow bursts, her nerves tangled with every step they took. She didn't know what to expect, but she had a sinking feeling that what they were about to witness would change everything.
The three of them slipped behind a rusted fence, crouching low with a perfect view of the meeting spot. The scent of wet earth and metal lingered in the air, but Avery couldn't focus on that. Her heart thudded in her chest, louder than the storm surrounding them.
Pope, always the cautious one, pulled out an old camera, adjusting the lens with practiced care. "Let's get some proof," he muttered, half to himself.
JJ raised an eyebrow, a mocking grin curling his lips. "Nice camera. Where'd you dig up that relic? Why don't you just use your phone?"
Avery couldn't help but smile, JJ's teasing always lightening the mood, but there was no humor in the pit of her stomach. Plus, he was right.
Pope didn't miss a beat. "Well, first of all, I like my antique electronics. Second of all, this is a telephoto. It lets me get a close-up without getting too close."
"Lord of the dorks." Kie muttered under her breath, stifling a laugh.
Avery watched Pope carefully, understanding the importance of the camera. He wasn't just capturing moments; he was documenting their scene in a way that might protect them later. "For definitive proof of witness payoff, we're gonna need quality glass." he explained. Avery nodded, her focus snapping back to the street as she nudged JJ. She spotted Ward Cameron walking into the scene, and a chill ran through her.
"There he is," he whispered.
As the man approached, the weight of what was happening settled heavier on Avery's chest. The sound of footsteps in the wet street became muffled as JJ suddenly tugged her down, his body covering hers protectively. For a moment, she was grateful, the brief relief from the rain giving her a second to catch her breath.
"Yo, get down." JJ hissed urgently, his voice sharp.
Seconds later, Gavin arrived, stepping inside a nearby construction site. The structure blocked their view of the men, frustrating Pope, but JJ wasn't about to waste time. He scanned the area, eyes scanning for another vantage point. Then he whistled, drawing their attention. "Yo! Hey. I found something. Come here."
Without hesitation, they followed JJ as he led them to a nearby ladder, leading to the roof of a building. The rain continued to pour down, but the roof offered a new perspective—a clear line of sight to Ward and Gavin. They crouched behind a low wall, keeping low and watching carefully as the two men began to argue fiercely, their voices barely audible over the storm.
