The group found themselves on a deserted island, their bodies exhausted from the endless pursuit, but grateful for the temporary respite. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore was a welcome break from the chaos they'd been through. The soft sand beneath their feet felt grounding after everything they'd endured. The air was thick with the salty scent of the ocean, and the sky stretched wide above them, a vast expanse of blue.
The girls were scattered across the beach, their tired bodies settling into the warmth of the sun. Avery sat with her knees tucked close to her chest, gazing out at the horizon, lost in thought. Her heart still raced, the adrenaline of the past events still pulsing in her veins. She couldn't stop her eyes from flicking to JJ as he struggled to pull the boat toward the shore with the boys. His movements were slower than usual, his strength faltering.
As JJ stumbled slightly, Avery's breath caught in her throat. She jumped to her feet, her heart pounding as John B steadied him, concern flickering across his face. Avery's gaze never left JJ, her worry clear in her eyes as she watched him closely.
"JJ, you all right there, buddy?" John B's voice broke through the tension, though there was an underlying warmth, his way of trying to keep things light.
"Yeah. Still a little dizzy," JJ replied, his voice faint but steady as he took a slow step toward Avery. The dizziness was evident in the way he swayed, but he was doing his best to stand tall. He leaned slightly on Avery for support, his shoulder brushing hers. The warmth of his presence reassured her, though the worry still gnawed at her.
"Okay, anybody know where we're at?" JJ asked, his tone still laced with sarcasm, trying to mask the frustration that simmered just beneath the surface.
"Deserted beach, unknown island," Pope replied, his voice flat as he settled down on the sand next to Cleo. There was an air of resignation in his words, as if the weight of their situation had finally hit him.
"I'll take that as a no," JJ muttered, glancing around at the dense jungle that bordered the beach. The world around them was both beautiful and intimidating. The thick greenery and towering palm trees offered a sense of isolation, but they were far from safe. It was a reminder that they were stranded, with no idea how long they'd be here or what lay ahead. "Plan A, huh, Pope? That went well."
"This is the lowest we can go," Pope sighed, clearly exhausted. "We literally have nothing else to lose. The cross, gone." His voice cracked with the weight of everything they'd lost. The words hung in the air like a heavy fog.
"The gold, gone," Sarah added, her voice quieter, tinged with bitterness.
JJ chuckled darkly, trying to lighten the mood. "Seriously, if we had a nickel for every time we got beat up, I'd say we're at a dollar fifty."
"That's more than I got on me," Kie muttered, patting down her shorts as though searching for anything of value. Avery could hear the weariness in her voice, the exhaustion from all their trials.
