The room was unnervingly temperate, its climate-controlled air doing nothing to ease the heat that prickled Avery's skin. Despite the luxurious satin pajamas she wore and the softness of the large bed that stretched beneath her, she couldn't shake the discomfort that gnawed at her. She'd been cleaned up, changed, offered the kind of comfort she hadn't known in days—but sleep eluded her. The sheets tangled around her like a constant reminder of her captivity.
The night dragged on with every turn of her body, restless and too aware of the space around her. The heavy silence pressed against her ears, making her hyper-aware of every creak and shift in the room. She had hoped the softness of the bed would lull her into something resembling peace, but the proximity to Rafe Cameron, the thought of being trapped here with him, kept her awake. This—being stuck in the same room as him after everything that had happened—was something her mind couldn't settle. Her nerves were on edge, her body tense and wound tight.
Avery glanced across the room at the spot on the floor where Rafe had chosen to sleep. It irritated her to see how effortlessly he rested, his back turned to her in a way that made him seem peaceful. How could he sleep so soundly? How could he even try to sleep, knowing the mess he had caused? Avery swallowed back the bitterness rising in her throat. He didn't deserve rest. But the idea of him sleeping so peacefully, when she was anything but, only made the reality of her situation feel more suffocating.
The soft chirping of birds outside the window felt almost mocking in contrast to the turmoil inside her. Their cheerful sounds drifted in through the open air, creating a serene ambiance that had no place here. Avery's heart clenched, and for a moment, she imagined the sound of a heavy metal door slamming shut—an impenetrable barrier between her and freedom. That, she thought, would be more fitting. The reality was too strange, too wrong.
She pushed herself out of bed, trying to ignore the thick discomfort in her chest. As she moved toward the window, her eyes caught the guard standing just outside, his posture rigid as he observed the surroundings. She tapped on the window, a sound that felt sharp and jarring against the silence. The guard flinched, clearly startled by the noise. She tapped again, louder this time, trying to get his attention.
"I need to talk to Mr. Singh," she said, keeping her voice low, hoping not to wake Rafe. The words felt strange on her tongue, as if saying them out loud made everything feel even more unreal. She wasn't sure what she expected from the guard, but his lack of response only made her frustration bubble up. She didn't care if she woke Rafe at this point.
"Hey, go get Mr. Singh," she repeated, more insistent this time.
But before the guard could react, she heard a groggy voice behind her. "What are you doing?"
Avery tensed, her heart racing for a split second before she recognized it was Rafe. She spun around, her eyes narrowing. Of course. He had to be awake now, didn't he? He never made things easy. She ignored him and turned back to the window, her fists tapping sharply against the glass again.
