The next morning, Avery woke from a restless slumber, her phone's shrill ring cutting through the haze of her dreams. The events of the previous night felt like a distant echo, and she had successfully avoided speaking to anyone - her parents included. The thought of facing them was dauting.

Yet, an insistent tug at her heart urged her to answer the call. She sensed it was something important, something she couldn't ignore. Her fingers tightened around her phone as she picked it up without glancing at the caller ID.

"Avery! Avery!" Sarah's voice crackled through the line, "Last night, I met with John B to give him the map, and then Topper pushed him off and he fell from so so high and now we're at the hospital..."

Avery struggled to grasp the frantic words, her mind racing. "Hospital? What? Sarah, I can barely understand you."

"Topper shoved John B off the Hawk's nest last night," Sarah managed to breathe between panicked breaths. "We're at the hospital right now..."

"What?" Avery shot up in bed, gasping with her heart pounding in her chest. "Is he okay?"

"Broken wrist, he's awake, he's fine." Sarah said, the urgency in her voice softening slightly. "But...uh, my dad took him in - he'd been running from DCS for a while."

A laugh slipped from Avery's lips, a sound tinged with disbelief. "So you're siblings now? That's awkward."

The tension in Sarah's voice faded a bit, as relief washed over Avery. John B was okay, and that was what truly mattered. Yet, a hollow sensation settled in her stomach. She realized she was stepping away from the thrill of the Pogues' escapages, a life she had begun to find exhilarating.

Avery hesitated, unsure if she should share the realization with her friend. Seconds later, the words spilled out before she could reign them in. She felt vulnerable admitting that she leaned toward the Pogue lifestyle, a truth that both terrified and exhilarated her.

"Meet me at the beach? We could talk about it." Sarah answered, her tone suddenly serious. Avery didn't feel like she meant it as a bad thing though. "I just have to go see Topper first... I need to break up with him."

Their plans shifted unexpectedly when John B appeared when they met at the beach, vibrant and full of energy. He announced that they found the gold and were now onto the next phase of their plan. The two girls had yet to discuss about the whole thing, so they weren't sure exactly what the other knew.

"So you found the gold, under an axe murderer's house?" Avery questioned, a smile tugging at her lips as the trio made their way to the Château.

"Well, yeah, uh- kind of."

"That's perfect!"

"Yes. I mean, the only thing is the well is super sketchy deep." John B told them, guiding them around the property.
