Despite the weight of the events that unfolded only hours ago, the Pogues stuck together. They made their way back to the Château, leaving Sarah to confront her family alone. Avery's heart ached for her friend, but she knew there was little she could do. Sarah was navigating a storm that no one else could understand. The world felt heavy, but they still had each other.
Back at the Cameron estate, Rafe had been released from jail. Apparently, Ward had taken the blame for Peterson's incident, sparing Rafe from any more consequences for now. Avery couldn't bring herself to be near him— even if it was to support Sarah. And even if she did try to go, Rose would likely slam the door in her face. Avery didn't even want to test it.
So, she went with the Pogues. The only place that still felt like home.
Avery leaned against the wooden railing of the dock, staring out over the marshland. The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting the sky in a dusky purple glow. JJ stood beside her, fishing, his eyes scanning the water. John B lay sprawled on the hull of the boat, his fingers brushing idly against the wooden planks, while Kie sat next to him, her legs crossed. Pope was sitting on the dock, his elbows propped up on his knees as he gazed out at the water too.
The silence between them was thick, the kind of silence that spoke volumes. It wasn't comfortable, but it was familiar. And then, as if trying to break the tension, JJ's voice cut through the quiet like a blade.
"He deserved it, right?" The casualness of the question startled Avery. Her head snapped to him, disbelief flashing in her eyes. She didn't expect him to say something like that—not after everything they'd witnessed.
But then again, this was JJ, and they had celebrated the downfall of Ward Cameron the day before. It shouldn't have been a surprise.
JJ raised an eyebrow, turning to look at her. His face was a mixture of genuine curiosity and defiance. "Tell me there's not an ounce of you that doesn't think he deserved it."
Avery blinked, caught off guard. She opened her mouth, but the words didn't come out right away. Did she think Ward deserved it? Avery didn't want to say it out loud, but the truth lingered in the back of her mind. Ward Cameron was a man of power, a man who had done irreparable damage. Yet... she still felt a strange, inexplicable sorrow at his end.
"You don't even know what ounces are," she shot back, trying to ignore the way her heart had clenched in the face of everything.
"I know that 1.5 ounces makes a shot," JJ retorted, clearly unfazed, his lighthearted smirk appearing again. Avery couldn't help but roll her eyes, even though a small chuckle escaped her lips.
Kie laughed, shaking her head, but eventually, she turned toward JJ with a serious tone. "Of course he deserved it," she said simply, her words carrying an unexpected weight.
