"That's a lot of wax on your board. Put too much wax, it's gonna be slippery," Pope said, watching JJ from a few feet away. The afternoon sun bathed them in golden warmth, casting long shadows on the weathered wood of the dock, the saltwater air sharp and fresh.
After the conversation between JJ and Avery, Kie and Pope decided to get up, stretching their limbs as they all made their way outside. Avery remained seated, engrossed in her book, while Kie strummed lightly on her ukulele, the peaceful melody floating over the sound of the gentle lapping waves. Meanwhile, Pope and JJ had moved to their boards, with JJ applying layer after layer of wax with a zeal that made Pope shake his head.
"Are you telling me how to wax my board, Pope?" JJ shot back, blinking rapidly, his eyebrows arched in feigned disbelief. His defensive tone cut through the air, accompanied by the slight rustle of the surfboard as he worked.
"Just saying that's a lot of wax," Pope replied, his tone dry as he observed his friend's overzealous approach. Avery glanced up from her book raising an eyebrow. Kie paused in her music, the strings of the ukulele vibrating as she looked over her shoulder at the exchange.
"You're telling me how to wax my board?" JJ repeated, standing up straight, his voice rising with a mix of disbelief and frustration. His body tensed, the muscles in his arms tightening as he faced Pope."You kidding?"
"That's a colossal waste of wax," Pope quipped, his tone dripping with mock annoyance. The words hung in the air, and Avery rolled her eyes. Kie sighed, shaking her head, ready to step in and remind them to stop squabbling over something so trivial. But before she could, the honking of a car horn broke through the tension, cutting through the moment like a loud snap.
The group fell silent, each of them turning toward the sound. The honking grew louder, and as the familiar shape of the "Twinkie" came into view, the excitement in the air was palpable.
"Hold on. Am I dreaming?" JJ's voice was filled with disbelief, and a grin spread across his face as he started running toward the car. Avery's heart skipped a beat as she followed, not knowing what to expect but certain that this was a moment she wouldn't forget. The others, too, cheered, their faces lighting up in a collective rush of joy and confusion.
The car pulled up, the engine's idle hum finally stopping, and John B emerged from the Twinkie with a carefree grin plastered across his face. He looked like he'd just escaped a labyrinth, as if nothing could keep him down for long.
"Guess who's out of the clink, boy!" John B announced, his voice brimming with pride as he hopped out of the car and skipped toward them, his energy infectious.
A joyful rush followed as the group enveloped him in a tight, collective hug, laughter ringing out in the warm air, all of them trying to fit into the embrace at once. The sun cast a golden glow over their faces, but in that moment, none of them cared about anything other than the fact that John B was free.
