The four teenagers stood in silence on the dock, watching the Phantom grow smaller on the horizon as John B steered it away. He glanced back one, his gaze meeting theirs for a brief, aching moment before the boat disappeared into the mist. Their hearts tightened in their chests, knowing that John B was leaving them all behind, but understanding it was something he had to do. It was a necessary sacrifice, even though it felt like a wound that would never fully heal.

Avery's hand rested on JJ's shoulder, giving it a quiet, reassuring squeeze. She couldn't help but notice the way his eyes welled with unshed tears, a weight of sadness and uncertainty pressing down on him. The pain etched in every line of his face, but he was trying to stay strong her everyone else. Avery's heart ached for him - she could feel his hurt as if it were her own, but she also knew his connection to John B ran deeper than hers. The thought of him being gone for months - or possibly longer - was a hole that could swallow JJ whole, and Avery didn't know how he'd manage without his best friend.

Behind them, Kie and Pope were talking in quiet tones, lost in their own world of conversation. Avery wasn't trying to eavesdrop, but her curiosity got the best of her. She couldn't help but overhear Pope's apologetic words and the soft, lingering silence that followed. Avery turned just in time to catch the unexpected sight of Kie and Pope sharing a kiss. She blinked in surprise, quickly looking away, a flush of embarrassment creeping over her.

"Maybank." Avery muttered under her breath, nudging JJ to get his attention.

He glanced over and snickered, a sly grin tugging at the corner of his mouth, "Should we..."

Avery cut him off, her voice firm but with a hint of amusement. "Shut up." She pushed him away playfully, trying and failing to suppress a smile. JJ's laughter was the only thing that felt light in an otherwise heavy moment. But their moment of humor was quickly shattered by the distant wail of sirens, slicing through the air and reminding them that they were far from safe.

"Hey, guys, uh, sorry to ruin the party but we gotta go, right now. Come on!" JJ called out to Kie and Pope, who were still lost in their moment.

They barely made it halfway to the car when police cars surrounded them, sirens blaring. Instinctively, all four teens raised their hands, the tension thickening as officers rushed toward them, guns at the ready, all their attention focused on finding John B.

"Bratcher, have your guys stand down. Let me talk to these kids." Shoupe's voice rang out, cutting through the chaos. He marched up to them, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed their faces. "All right, where the hell is he? Where the hell is he?" He demanded, his voice rising with frustration. He turned to JJ and Pope. "JJ, I see you're livin' up to your name. Pope, how about you? This isn't a fucking game! You can do the right thing now! Where'd he go?"

"Suspect has just left Station 26 in a small boat. Need marine patrol to respond." The SBI Agent, Bratcher, called over the radio.

Avery felt her stomach churn. She couldn't believe they were still looking for John B. The idea that they were treating him like a criminal, despite everything that had happened, unsettled her more than she wanted to admit.
