The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm orange glow across the beach. The ocean waves lapped lazily against the shore, the gentle rhythm of the water offering a peaceful soundtrack to the lazy afternoon. Avery laid back, her arms behind her head, eyes half-closed as she soaked in the warmth of the sun. Beside her, Sarah, Cleo, and Kie were scattered in their own comfortable positions, creating a loose circle in the sand.
For several minutes, the only sounds that filled the air were the soft crash of the waves and the occasional rustling of palm fronds swaying in the breeze. The world seemed to hold its breath, as if nothing could disturb the moment. But Avery, ever attuned to the subtle shifts in energy, could feel something lingering beneath the calm surface—a tension, like the quiet before a storm. It wasn't long before Cleo, always the one to break the silence, flashed a mischievous grin.
"Alright, who's going to admit it? Who's got the hots for who around here?" she asked, her voice full of playful challenge.
Avery smirked, barely opening her eyes. She already knew where this was headed. "You're really going there, huh?" she replied, her tone light but tinged with a hint of apprehension.
Sarah, who had been lying next to her, shifted and sat up, her eyes gleaming with amusement. "We could start with you," she teased, her voice dripping with knowing curiosity.
Avery's eyes snapped open, her pulse skipping at the unexpected attention. "What?" she asked, caught completely off guard.
"You've got something going on with JJ, don't you?" Sarah continued, her tone casual but full of mischievous delight. "Don't even try to act surprised. We've seen the way you two look at each other and act together."
Avery's stomach fluttered involuntarily, and her cheeks flushed. She quickly hid her reaction behind a roll of her eyes. "Oh, please. JJ's just... JJ. You know how he is. We're just friends." She laughed softly, but it was a nervous laugh, one that didn't quite hide the warmth blooming in her cheeks.
"Friends, huh? Is that what we're calling it?" Kie raised an eyebrow, a sly grin playing at the corners of her lips. Her amusement only grew as Avery's discomfort became more evident. "We've already established that you two kissed."
Avery hesitated, the air feeling heavier all of a sudden. Her heart raced, but she exhaled, willing herself to stay composed. "Okay, fine. Yeah, we've kissed. But that doesn't mean there's anything more serious going on. JJ's... complicated." She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, a gesture she did when she was trying to mask her nerves "I'm just trying to figure it out."
"Well, not even five hours into knowing you guys, and I could tell there was something between you two," Cleo chimed in, her fingers idly tracing circles in the sand. "You can't hide it, Avery."
"I know you, Avery. There's definitely something there," Sarah said softly, her voice sincere, though there was a hint of understanding beneath the words. Avery knew Sarah was alluding to her messy breakup with Rafe, though neither of them had ever fully discussed it. "Whether you want to admit it or not, it's there."
