The next morning, the sun was high and harsh, making the beach look as though it were sweltering in an endless heatwave. Kie and Pope worked on the winch, their movements synchronized. JJ, on the other hand, sat on the edge of the hot tub - his legs in the water - as he took slow, lazy puffs from a blunt. His feet dangled in the water, the only signs of movement on his otherwise relaxed form.
Avery had walked out of the house, the weight of her bag heavy on her shoulder. She squinted at the sky as though trying to predict the day ahead.
"Hey, princess." JJ called out, his voice almost too casual, as though the night before had evaporated into the thick summer air. He waved his blunt lazily in her direction, as ig it were the most natural thing in the world. "Want a drag? Or a sip?" He gestured to the beer bottle resting next to him.
Avery smirked, her steps slowing as she approached her car, "For breakfast?" She shot back, raising an eyebrow. "I'm more of a pancakes kind of girl."
JJ grinned, taking another drag while his eyes flickered to the horizon, watching the others work. "I'll remember that."
His voice shifted when he noticed her walking toward her car. "John B pulling a Houdini and you're just abandoning us?"
Avery's chest tightened at the mention of John B, hating the position he was in. She had expected JJ to retreat into his usual shell after the emotional mess of the night before, but here he was, still poking fun, still acting as if nothing had changed.
Avery shrugged, "I gotta make a sign of life at home if I want to keep my parents to send me to some 'good girl camp' type thing." She joked, tugging open her car door. She didn't turn around, but her voice was light. "Let me know when John B comes back."
JJ gave her a lazy salute, a teasing smirk pulling at his lips. "Will do princess, we'll make sure to let him know you did none of the work!"
"Neither did you, JJ." Pope shot back from across the yard, his voice deadpan. He didn't even bother to look up from his task.
"Yeah, at least she paid." Kie chimed in, making Avery chuckle at JJ's mock outrage.
Her eyes caught JJ flipping them off, and she couldn't help but smile. Waving over her shoulder, she climbed into her car and pulled out, the engine's hum a comfort as she drove away. She was glad for the temporary peace, but as she drove, the tightness in her chest never fully eased.
She knew her parents would be home soon, but the house felt different now. It no longer felt like a safe haven; it felt like a cage. The familiar anxiety crept in again, the kind she had known her whole life - the feeling that she was being watched, scrutinized.
By the time her parents came through the door, the house felt suffocating, the weight of their silent expectations pressing down on her. Dinner, as always, was an unwelcomed ritual - an awkward exercise in pretending everything was normal. She sat at the table, her smile tight, her eyes not quite meeting theirs.
