The entire day at school dragged on for Avery. She woke up later than she should have, realizing she'd forgotten to set her alarm the night before. Panic set in as she scrambled to get ready, nearly tripping a couple of times in her rush. But, despite her frantic efforts, she was still late to her first class of the day.
Something felt off, too. She had woken up alone in her house, and the emptiness of it was unsettling. The night before had been... complicated. She couldn't shake the memories, and the fact that her friends had all left after a night spent together made her feel strange, like she was still processing everything.
Avery's mind drifted back to the moment when she'd pulled away from JJ. His eyes had met hers, already full of that lazy, teasing smile she couldn't quite resist. She felt her face warm up, biting her lip as she tried to hide her smile, but JJ only chuckled and shook his head.
"I should probably go to sleep," she had whispered, unsure if she meant it. She wasn't sure what she wanted, honestly. But when JJ simply nodded, watching her leave without saying much, she felt a quiet disappointment settle in. She tiptoed out of his room, avoiding a glance back, even when he wished her goodnight.
The rest of the morning went by in a blur. No text, no call. Nothing. She knew they all had to get to school, but still, it stung. For her own sake, she tried to push it from her mind and focus on the day ahead.
When the final bell rang, Avery left school with her bag slung over her shoulder, already tired of the day. But as she stepped outside, she stopped dead in her tracks. Three excited Pogues were waiting by her car. Their energy was unmistakable, but she couldn't bring herself to look at JJ directly as she approached them.
"Hi, what's going on?" Avery asked, raising an eyebrow.
"We're going to Charleston," Pope announced, waving a letter around in front of her. She frowned, confused, and stepped closer to take it from him. As she read it, her brows furrowed even more. The letter made no sense to her.
"Yeah, I can't read cursive either," JJ said with a grin, clearly misinterpreting her expression. They all looked at him, unamused.
"Uh, I can read cursive just fine, JJ..." Avery muttered, turning to Kie and Pope. "What does this even mean?"
After they explained, Avery's confusion turned into intrigue. Someone had proof that could clear John B's name—and that someone was tied to the Captain of the Royal Merchant. That was all she needed to hear. She was in.
The group piled into Pope's truck, and Avery drove her own car over to her house. She had to at least let her parents know before they headed out. They had just returned from their vacation, and she couldn't just disappear without telling them.
The Pogues waited in Pope's dad's truck while Avery went inside to talk to her parents. She stepped out onto the back porch with them, dreading the conversation she knew was coming. The moment she mentioned her plans to go to Charleston, they immediately shot her down.
