"Nice work, John B. You know these things lock from the outside, right?" JJ's voice dripped with sarcasm, his frustration simmering under the surface as he paced back and forth. His unease was palpable, and though Avery kept her composure, she couldn't help but notice the irony in his tone. JJ, the mastermind of countless chaotic plans, was suddenly skeptical when the plan didn't come from him."Okay, I was just trying to get us on the boat, JJ. I wasn't thinking that far ahead," John B replied, the edge of irritation in his voice.
Avery could almost feel the heat rising from the room as JJ's temper began to flare. "Now we're stuck in here like rats," JJ muttered, his voice growing louder as his frustration built. His feet stamped across the floor, the air around them thick with his restless energy.
"It's hot," Kie muttered, peeling off her coat. The temperature in the container was suffocating, making every breath feel like a laborious task. Avery had already discarded her coat earlier, only wearing the tank top she had hurriedly grabbed after scrambling out of bed. She could feel the dampness of sweat sticking to her skin, the heat of the cramped space making it hard to think clearly. But it wasn't just the heat that made her uneasy.
She glanced at JJ—his furrowed brow and clenched fists telling her everything she needed to know. But she wasn't about to dive into that now. She shook her head, trying to clear her mind. This wasn't the time to focus on him, though it was hard to ignore.
"In this death cage!" JJ continued, his panic growing. He could no longer stand still, his movements agitated as he continued pacing the small space. Avery observed him carefully, trying to pinpoint what was really eating at him. This wasn't just about being stuck in a container. There was something else—a deeper frustration she couldn't quite place.
"Okay, JJ, you're not helping," Pope snapped, his voice cutting through the tension. He was tired of the back-and-forth, but Avery could see it wasn't just the heat weighing on him—it must have been the frustration of being trapped in this mess with no clear way out.
"You don't have a lot of room to talk right now, Pope," JJ shot back, his voice a mix of sarcasm and bitterness. "You said you had a plan, but what happened to thinking ahead?" JJ leaned heavily against a stack of boxes, his head hung low as he tried to keep his voice steady, but the words still spilled out in a sharp, accusatory tone.
"I find your lack of self-knowledge disturbing," Pope retorted, his words sharp but almost humorous. Avery knew Pope wasn't wrong, but it wasn't the time for jokes. She could feel JJ's frustration bubbling just beneath the surface.
JJ gave a dry, humorless laugh, turning to Pope with narrowed eyes. "Last I checked, you literally shot an oil container with the gat. Remember that?"
The words hung in the air, but before the situation could escalate further, Kie had had enough. She stood up abruptly from her perch on top of a pile of boxes and shot them all a furious look.
