The sun dipped low on the horizon, casting a golden glow across the sprawling shoreline of the Outer Banks. Waves lapped rhythmically against the sandy beach, a familiar melody that blended with the distant sound of laughter and music—a typical Saturday night on their side of the island. Avery Collins stood in front of her mirror, a faint sea breeze tousling her hair, the scent of salt and coconut lingering in the air.
Tonight was a Kegger, the kind of party where Kooks and Pogues collided in a chaotic blend of adrenaline and rivalry. Avery smoothed the fabric of her fitted tank top, glancing at the reflection of her sun-kissed skin. She was the embodiment of what it meant to be a Kook—privileged and carefree. Yet, beneath the confident exterior, she felt the familiar flutter of nerves and uncertainness.
Avery rummaged through her bag, her fingers brushing against the bottles of alcohol and a pair of sunglasses. "I really don't want to go, Sarah," she sighed, glancing at her reflection one last time.
Sarah, perched on the edge of Avery's bed, rolled her eyes playfully. "Come on, Avery! You can't miss this. It's going to be epic! Everyone will be there."
"Everyone? You mean the Pogues and their endless drama? I'd rather binge-watch reality TV." Avery crossed her arms, trying to project indifference, but the excitement of the party still tugged at her. She'd never admit it to her friends - but the Pogues' endless drama brought her sense of comfort somehow.
"Seriously? It'll be fun! Plus, you know you'll have a good time once you're there," Sarah replied, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "And who knows? You might even get to see Rafe. He'll probably be causing a scene as usual."
Avery grimaced. "Great, just what I need—an encounter with Mr. Trouble himself. I'm not in the mood to deal with him tonight."
"He's not that bad!" Sarah laughed, earning a glare from her friend. "Okay, he's definitely a handful."
"Handful? More like infuriating. He's your brother, you should know that." Avery tossed her hair over her shoulder, trying to suppress any other thoughts she might have about the boy. "I just don't want to deal with the whole Kook-Pogue rivalry. It's exhausting." Avery settled for a change of subject, wishing to speak about literally anything else than Rafe Cameron - but with his sister as her best friend, it was sort of inevitable.
"Trust me, once you get there and feel the energy, you'll forget all about it. Just think of it as a chance to unwind. Plus, you can't hide from him forever!" Sarah nudged her playfully. "You've got to face the music eventually."
With a reluctant sigh, Avery looked back at Sarah, who was practically glowing with anticipation. "Fine. But if it turns into some kind of chaotic showdown, I'm blaming you." She pointed an accusing finger at her friend, a smile tugging at her lips.
"Deal! Now, let's get out there and make some memories!" Sarah grinned, already pulling Avery toward the door.
As they stepped outside, the night air was charged with excitement, and despite her protests, Avery felt a flutter of anticipation. She might not want to go, but deep down, she knew the night had a way of surprising you.
