All day, Avery couldn't reach Sarah, leaving her alone and sulking in disappointment. Confused by her emotions, she realized she didn't care about whatever the Pogues were searching for.
Yet, there was an excitement in feeling connected to them - it felt good. Avery thought maybe this was what she needed, but she had to shake it off. There was no way her parents would let her out of the house again if they found out what she'd been up to.
With nothing else to do, she decided to head downtown for the 'summer movie series' - a popular event for teens at OBX. Avery usually went with Sarah and their friends, but this years, she found herself trying to avoid everyone instead.
Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted Kie sitting with JJ and Pope. They seemed tense when Kie returned from the food stand, glancing nervously over her shoulder. Following their gaze, Avery saw Rafe and Topper smirking at them.
Trouble. That was what everyone said the Pogues brought. But she was starting to see that it wasn't always about them.
Avery cursed under her breath, trying to focus on the movie - praying that if she pretended not to see them, they wouldn't notice her.
The hope to avoid everyone vanished when she saw JJ and Pope sneaking away from their seats toward the back of the screen. Shaking her head, she looked behind her. There was no way Rafe and Topper didn't see them. And she was right; seconds later, they followed in the same direction.
Cursing again, Avery stood up after a moment's hesitation. Kie remained in her seat, seemingly unaware of the brewing trouble. Feeling partly responsable for it, Avery refused to sit back while the Kooks - who were supposed to be her friends - went after Kie's friends.
As she walked down the small hill, she heard grunts and bodies shuffling around. Raising her head, she noticed Topper beating up Pope further away while Kelce held onto JJ tightly to help Rafe who was hitting him.
Of course, JJ was egging him on. "Come on, Rafe. That all you got?" The blond called out, receiving another fist across his face. It caused his lip to split open.
Avery couldn't stand to watch this go on any longer. She rushed towards Rafe - fully aware that she didn't stand a chance against him. Meanwhile, Kie's sudden appearance seemed to have put Topper on the defensive : she yelled at him and swung a back in his direction. Feeling confident that Kiara could handle herself, Avery redirected her focus back to the unfolding chaos near her.
"Rafe! Let him go," She punched his arm, as if that was enough to make him stop.
He snapped towards her, grabbing her by the waist as he threw her down on the ground - hearing her land with a thud. "Stay out of this, Avery!"
JJ struggled against Kelce's grip, unable to free himself fast enough - Rafe went back to hitting him.
"Admit you did it, bitch!" Topper yelled, holding Pope by the throat after pushing Kie off successfully.
