They settled down in the grass beside the trail, the night wrapping itself around them like a heavy cloak. The air was cool, but the stillness made it feel colder. Avery could feel the weight of JJ beside her, the shared silence a sharp contrast to the frantic energy of the past few moments.
But JJ couldn't quiet his mind. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Avery's face, the quiet pain in her eyes when she spoke of her past with Rafe. He hadn't missed the way she had closed off, how her voice had trembled for just a moment before she forced herself to continue. He knew she hadn't said everything—and that terrified him more than anything else.
The thought of Rafe's hands on her, of anyone hurting her, made his blood boil. He couldn't shake the image of her flinching, the desperation in her voice as she recounted the past. He'd seen the aftermath of Rafe's cruelty, but hearing it from Avery herself made his stomach twist.
But he had to push it aside—there wasn't time to lose focus now. The mission came first. They could talk about it later.
"It's gonna work," JJ muttered to himself, barely believing the words as they left his mouth. But it was the only thing he could cling to in that moment, the only thing that made sense in the chaos. He needed this to work—for her.
Seconds later, the screech of the train's brakes broke the silence. It was slowing down. The sound was deafening in the stillness of the night.
"She's slowing down," Avery said, the tension melting from her voice just slightly, her breath steadying. She couldn't help the giggle that escaped her lips. "We got brakes, dude."
But the moment was short-lived. The sound of an approaching truck broke the tension like glass shattering. JJ hissed, his eyes widening as he spun toward Avery, pushing her behind him with a protective instinct. "Ave. Back up. Back up."
Avery moved without hesitation, pulling him behind a nearby tree, her fingers gripping his arm tighter than necessary. "Shit," she muttered under her breath, watching as the truck's headlights grew brighter in the distance. This wasn't part of the plan.
The man in the truck stepped out, and Avery's heart sank as she saw the cables dangling from the side of the vehicle. "No, no, no," she whispered, her pulse quickening again.
The men unhooked the cables, inspecting them and waiting for the signal to turn green. The seconds dragged on, each one heavier than the last. Avery turned to JJ, anxiety clawing at her throat. "They had enough time, right?"
JJ's jaw clenched, his body tense. His eyes flicked between the men and the light, uncertainty settling in his chest. He didn't have an answer.
A few moments later, the unmistakable sound of the train's brakes releasing rang out through the night. "The train's starting," JJ muttered, his voice flat.
Avery's eyes widened, panic flaring. "We gotta go get them," she urged, the plan unraveling faster than they could handle.
"There goes the plan," JJ grunted, already helping her to her feet. "Let's go."
