a weekend after the last ball, was the mondrich's 'botanical ball' - the one in which dianna was majorly excited about. the dowager was simply too overjoyed that she ended up beside alice mondrich chatting the night away about her own botanist pursuits, some of which the mondrich woman shared.

edith, with no suprise necessary, took to standing beside or dancing with samuel the entire night - with the exception of chatting to penelope.

and alison, she missed benedict. after what tilley had said to her a few weeks prior, it had her thinking about apologising to the latter, yet she still hadn't. this made the girl feel worse, as she ground into him about not apologising sooner when in reality she had probably made it so hard for him due to her disdainful behaviour.

and now, alison feared it was too late as it seemed he had simply stopped bothering her since she ignored him at his brother's engagement party. perhaps he was too busy with lady arnold - that thought made alison sick to her stomach as, unlike most unmarried ladies her age, she knew what they were doing.

tilley arnold also wasn't a fool, as she knew that alison knew what they were doing. and so, when alison was at balls and soirees and such the older woman took to flaunting the fact. not out of jealousy or arrogance, tilley wasn't that type of woman, but to push the former a little as she knew (like everyone else) that it was going to be alison and benedict in the end.

though, tilley also hoped that the pair would happen sooner rather than later otherwise she'd have to stop herself from pursuing something serious with benedict. she just knew it. she also knew, that's when it would end between them, because benedict's feelings had always resided with alison and not her.

but alas, tilley was not here at the mondrich ball and neither was benedict. the two of them were probably in bed together having 'the time of their lives', whilst alison was trying her hardest not to mope as well as pay attention to what kothari was saying to her. but even that was hard.

friends as they were, alison had no idea how a man of such esteemed education and culture could be so deeply boring.

"-and then, he told me it was all a bunch of poppycock!" kothari chuckles. "and, i-" he paused, scanning the face of the girl that had zoned out, bless her. "alison, are you listening?"

"oh, yes." alison lets out a fake chuckle as he catches her attention. "apologies, i was just watching edith and mr castlewood dance. they make a handsome couple, do they not?" she lies, eager to change the subject.

"yes, they do." kothari agrees. "anyway, as i was saying-"

"what i meant to say.." the countess interrupts him quickly. "..was, might we discuss something else now?"
