"I should have known the other shoe would drop eventually," I breathed, my voice barely audible in the echoing space of the bathroom. I thought back to that horrific dream, the way MiMi had looked at me, her expression so sad, so seemingly... devastated. I knew it was some sort of warning. I could feel it the moment I woke up. Then, that night, Jungkook's gym had been vandalized. A week later, my mom showed up, her threats hanging over us like a storm cloud, but I really thought that was the worst of it.
Silly me.
"MiMi..." I spoke her name out loud as if she were physically in the room with me. Even with all her well wishes, it seemed like she still couldn't fight my destiny. Maybe I wasn't meant to have a happily ever after in this lifetime, but I still had a tiny sliver of hope. "I may not be able to hear you, but I believe you can hear me. I really need your help with this one. Put in a word with the Big Guy for me, okay?"
With a sigh, I stood in front of the mirror, my reflection staring back at me as if it held the answers to all the questions swirling in my mind. Turning slightly to the side, I pushed out my belly, pressing a hand gently against it, trying to picture what it might look like in a few months. A strange flutter danced in my chest—a mix of awe and disbelief.
Could there really be a tiny life growing inside me?
One that Jungkook and I had created together. A little piece of both of us. Our love intertwined.
The thought felt overwhelmingly beautiful and terrifying all at once. My hand lingered for a moment, and I wondered what he would say, how his face would light up, or maybe go pale, when he found out.
I turned to the other side and smoothed my hand over my belly again, imagining what it would feel like when it started to grow, when it wouldn't just be a secret I carried alone. I took another deep breath, leaning closer to the mirror, studying my face as if I might see some change, some sign that everything had shifted. It felt surreal, standing here, knowing everything was different yet I still looked the same.
Before I left the bathroom, I brushed my teeth and then made my way back to the couch, trying not to count every minute that slowly ticked by on the clock. When Jungkook finally came home, he looked more tired and frustrated than I'd seen him in a long time, the cuts on his face standing out under the dim light.
"Hey," he greeted me softly, dropping his keys on the kitchen counter. "Sorry that took longer than I thought."
"What happened?" I asked, trying to keep the worry out of my voice as I got up to hug him. "What did they say?"
He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "They just wanted to follow up on the report I gave earlier and make sure it was actually self-defense since the other guy was in much worse condition than I was and tried to say I started the fight." He shook his head, a faint trace of irritation in his tone. "I think they're just trying to cover their bases, but there were witnesses. So, no, I'm not in trouble, if that's what you're worried about."
