JUNGKOOK

I leaned back in the plush leather seat, letting out a breath as I took in the view of the Pacific from the tiny window beside me. Today would have been the day Aria and I were leaving for Jeju, but instead we were heading to Hawaii of all places.

The excitement of going somewhere new stirred in me, even under the circumstances. Hawaii wasn't exactly a vacation, and the reasons behind it were anything but casual. Yet here we were, crossing the world together, heading straight into the turbulence of her family. But being by her side, in whatever life threw our way, felt like exactly where I needed to be.

I'd never been to the U.S. before, or flown private for that matter, and until a few months back, I didn't even have a passport. Aria had encouraged me to get one, almost as if she'd known something like this was coming. When I thought about it, it was exactly like her to think ahead, to make sure we'd be prepared for whatever came our way.

Glancing over at the love of my life, her head resting on my shoulder, I thought about how much my entire world had changed since she'd entered it. Living in a high-rise apartment overlooking the Han River and driving a luxury vehicle had all become somewhat normal now, I guess, but sometimes I was still hit by just how contrasted our lives were.

Aria came from wealth, a life where flying on a private jet and staying in the most luxurious accommodations wasn't out of the ordinary. I'd never cared much about any of it, and of course, she'd never flaunted it, but every now and then, like on this flight, it reminded me just how different our upbringings had been. And yet, here we were, sharing it all together.

As we began our descent, I caught a glimpse of the horizon where the late afternoon sun hung low in the sky. The first hints of blush washed over the clouds as they parted like a curtain being drawn back, revealing a paradise below.

The ocean shimmered beneath the sun's rays, the water shifting from deep turquoise to glimmers of molten gold. The sun seemed to hover, poised above the sea, its light spilling over the coastlines and the jagged cliffs, creating a halo around the islands. The beauty of it was almost too much to hold in a single glance, and for a moment, I just watched in silence, taken aback by the vastness of it all. It was a lot to take in, but it felt right—like we were exactly where we were supposed to be, even if it was halfway across the world to face the people who wanted to tear us apart.

The hum of the plane engine filled the quiet space around us, a constant reminder of the miles we were crossing, bringing us closer to what would change everything. I glanced over at Aria, who had slept through most of our nine-hour flight. The emotional and mental strain she'd been under must have been taking a physical toll, leaving her tired and sleeping more than usual lately. Looking at her now, I was overwhelmed by the depth of what I felt for her. I reached out and gently brushed my knuckles over her cheek, unable to resist her pull, even as she slept.
