The truth?

My stomach tightened, my mind already racing. I thought I knew what happened that night—at least the broad strokes of it. Over the years, I'd pieced it together, filling in the blanks with assumptions. But the weight in his voice made me wonder how much more there could have been to this situation that had ripped our family apart all those years ago.

My dad looked away for a moment, his jaw tightening before he spoke again. "That night, your mom found out I was having an affair. She was waiting for me when I came home, and the second I walked through the door, she was on me—yelling, threatening, demanding answers. She wanted to know everything, and I... I couldn't deny it anymore. I had to tell her it wasn't just an affair—the woman was pregnant."

He paused, dragging in a shaky breath, his voice growing heavier with each word. "She said I'd ruined our family, that I'd humiliated her, betrayed her. But then she told me to get rid of it—the baby. She didn't care how. She didn't care about the consequences or anyone else involved. She just wanted the problem to disappear."

I nodded slowly, the memory of that night slamming into me like a freight train. Her screams, the slap, the suffocating silence that followed. "Yeah, I remember hearing Mom say something about making the problem go away, but I couldn't hear your response. I'm assuming you just... did whatever you had to do to keep her happy, right?"

His gaze held mine, his eyes filled with something raw and vulnerable."She gave me an ultimatum. Either I ended it, or she'd do it herself. And I knew she meant it. I could see it in her eyes—she wasn't bluffing. She told me if I didn't take care of it, she'd find someone who would." He paused, choosing his words carefully, each one heavy. "So, that night, I told her what she wanted to hear—I said I'd take care of it. I said whatever I had to, just to keep her from doing something rash. But I didn't—I didn't do what she wanted. I couldn't."

I froze, a strange mix of relief and disbelief washing over me, quickly followed by confusion. "Wait... you're saying you didn't terminate the pregnancy?"

"No." He exhaled deeply, his voice carrying an emotion I couldn't quite decipher. "But I let her believe I did. I told myself I'd make it right someday, but the years kept slipping away."

My heart raced as I processed what he was saying, the utter shock crashing over me in waves. "Oh my God! Are you telling me I have a... a sibling? That's been out there all this time... and no one knew? Not even Mom?"

He flinched, the guilt written all over his face. "Yes. You have a half-brother. He's almost 21 now."

The words landed like a punch to the gut, leaving me momentarily breathless. A brother. The thought felt surreal, too massive to fully comprehend in the moment. All this time, there had been another piece to the story—a piece that explained so much while unraveling everything I thought I knew. A million questions swirled in my mind, too many to form into coherent sentences. I opened my mouth, but the words refused to come. Somehow, though, he began to answer each one like he could see the questions written on my face.
