After the cruise ship returned to port and the exam concluded, we were finally back at school. The usual buzz filled the air, with students settling into their routines. But soon, the school had something new to announce—a Sports Festival.
During the morning assembly, our homeroom teacher, Chabashira-sensei, stood at the front of the classroom with a stack of papers. Her expression, as usual, was stern. “Listen up. The school has scheduled the annual Sports Festival, and it’s happening soon,” she announced, her voice echoing through the room.
The atmosphere immediately shifted. Some students groaned, while others whispered excitedly among themselves. As for me, I felt a rush of excitement. I remembered reading about this festival in the light novel, and now, I had the chance to live through it.
“This festival is important,” Chabashira continued. “Your performance here can affect your class points. So, don’t think of it as just fun and games. There will be events ranging from relays to obstacle courses. All students are expected to participate.”
I exchanged glances with Ayanokoji, who was seated quietly beside me, as usual. His face remained unreadable, but I knew he had already figured out how the events would play out—just like in the anime.
Chabashira-sensei started handing out sheets detailing the rules of the Sports Festival. “I’ll explain the format and the rules,” she said, and the class quieted down as she continued. “The festival is split into two halves: morning and afternoon sessions. In the morning, we’ll have individual events, such as the 100-meter dash, long jump, and tug-of-war. In the afternoon, we’ll have team events like the relay race and cavalry battle.”
“Points will be awarded based on individual performance and team effort,” she added. “And don’t forget, the class with the highest points overall will receive a significant boost to their class points. This is your chance to improve Class D’s ranking even more.”
Everyone became serious after listening the last part.
“I’m so excited about this!” I whispered to Ayanokoji, barely containing my enthusiasm. “It’s going to be just like in the light novel!” I thought in my mind.
He gave me a quick glance. “It’s just another exam. Nothing more.”
I laughed softly. “Sure, but it’s also a chance to have fun and show everyone what we’re capable of.”
The rest of the day was filled with more talk about the Sports Festival. During lunch, I met up with my usual group of friends—Kushida, Sakura, and Horikita—along with Ayanokoji. We found a quiet spot outside where we could discuss the upcoming events.
“I can’t wait for the festival!” Kushida said with a bright smile, her eyes gleaming with excitement. “It’s going to be so much fun, and we get to compete together as a class.”
Sakura nodded shyly. “I’m a little nervous… I’m not that great at sports.”
“Don’t worry, Sakura,” I said, trying to reassure her. “There are events for everyone, and it’s about teamwork. We’ll all help each other out.”
Kushida grinned. “That’s why we have you, Horikita. You’re always so good at planning.”
Matsushita nodded. “True. The school wouldn’t just make this about sports. It’s an exam, after all.”
Ayanokoji, who had been quietly observing, finally spoke up. “The rules are straightforward. If we work together and avoid unnecessary risks, we should do fine.”
I nodded in agreement, remembering how crucial teamwork had been in the novel’s version of the Sports Festival. “We just have to stay focused. This could be our chance to move up the ranks.”
