Chapter 27: "The Trip and Tensions"

The school announced a special trip, a much-needed break yet filled with underlying motives, like most things at this school. After the recent incident, Kei had grown noticeably closer to Ayanokoji and me. She would often find reasons to be around us like helping us gathering info on some matters secretly, because she was grateful for what we had done for her. I could tell she admired the way we worked together, and it made me smile at times.

When we arrived, the students were divided into groups similar to the setup in the previous special exams. Ayanokoji’s group included Koenji, Hashimoto, Yukimura, and Ishizaki. When Ishizaki spotted Ayanokoji, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the subtle shiver that went down his spine.

“What happened, Ishizaki?” Yukimura asked.

“Nothing.” Ishizaki replied with a serious yet scared face due to Ayanokoji.

Meanwhile, my group consisted of Kushida and a few other girls from ClassA and D. At dinner, Kushida and I found a quiet spot and discussed the potential strategies and issues that could arise during this trip.

“Kushida, any thoughts on what Nagumo might be planning?” I asked, stirring my cup of tea.

She smiled, the corners of her eyes crinkling. “He’s always got something up his sleeve. We need to be prepared for anything.”

I nodded. “Exactly. This trip isn’t just a vacation. There’s always a hidden agenda.”

Later that night, Ayanokoji and I were walking down the hallway, reflecting on the events with Ryuen.

“He hasn’t made any new moves, but we should still be cautious,” Ayanokoji said, his tone measured.

“Agreed,” I replied. Just then, something glinted on the floor. I bent down and picked up a keychain with a small charm. “I know this belongs to Asahina from Nagumo’s class in second year.”

We decided to find her and return it. After a few minutes, we located her near the common area.

“Hey, this is yours, right?” I handed her the keychain.

Asahina’s eyes lit up, and she took it with a playful smile. “Ah, so it is. Thanks a lot, you two! Always looking out for others, huh?” Her gaze shifted between us, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “You two are spending quite a bit of time together. Are you two perhaps a couple or something?”

Ayanokoji and I exchanged looks, then immediately denied in unison, “No, we’re not.”

She laughed, waving as she walked away. “If you say so. See you around.”

I sighed, giving Ayanokoji a look. “Why do people always jump to conclusions?”

He shrugged. “It’s human nature.”

We both went our separate ways after that, heading to our respective rooms.

The next few days mirrored the events happened in season 3. My brother, Manabu, made a bet with Nagumo, an intense competition that caught the attention of many students. It was clear that the stakes were high, and the atmosphere around the school trip was charged with tension. And some students getting expelled.

During this time, Sakayanagi was planning to use Yamauchi against our class to get our secret info regarding our future strategies. And not only just Yamauchi, she was planning to do something with Ichinose to weak her class.

The trip wasn't just about relaxation; it was a battlefield of strategies, rivalries, and alliances. But for now, we waited, prepared for whatever was to come.
