The special exam began with intensity. Representatives from each class – Ayanokoji for Class C, Ichinose for Class B, Sakayanagi for Class A, and, surprisingly, Ryuen for Class D – stepped forward, ready to face off. Despite not having protection points, Ryuen's fierce eyes showed he was in it for the thrill, not fear.
Throughout the exam, I did my best to support our class, helping strategize and offering support in the activities. The atmosphere was charged with determination, each class pushing their limits. But as the exam progressed, something felt off. Subtle, untraceable errors crept into the system, favoring Class A in an unnatural way. It became evident that Tsukishiro was manipulating the outcome.
---
When the final results were announced, our class lost, and Ayanokoji’s protection point was stripped away. A murmur of discontent spread through Class C as disappointment settled in. Ayanokoji’s face remained unreadable, but I could sense the disapproval simmering beneath his calm expression.
Later that evening, I, Ayanokoji, and Sakayanagi walked through the dimly lit campus, processing the day’s outcome.
“It’s frustrating,” Sakayanagi admitted, her voice softer than usual. “I wanted to defeat you, Ayanokoji-kun, on fair grounds. Cheating ruins everything.”
I glanced at her, surprised by the hint of vulnerability in her eyes. “We all knew Tsukishiro was behind this. But this time, he’s made his move too obvious,” I said.
Sakayanagi sighed. “Still, despite today’s loss, it’s clear to me that you and I are not so different.” She turned to me, a small smile playing on her lips. “And you, too. You’ve piqued my interest, more than I expected.”
I felt a flush creep up my cheeks at her words, my heart beating a little faster. “Thanks, Sakayanagi. That means a lot coming from you.”
She nodded, satisfied. “We’ll have to figure out a way to counter Tsukishiro. But for now, we should rest.”
With that, we parted ways, each of us heading back to our rooms with thoughts heavy on the exam and what lay ahead.
---
The next morning, Ayanokoji and I went to Chabashira-sensei’s office. Sakayanagi and her homeroom teacher, Mashima-sensei, were already there.
“We suspect Acting Chairman Tsukishiro of tampering with the exam,” Sakayanagi stated bluntly, her eyes sharp.
Chabashira-sensei exchanged a look with Mashima-sensei. “If this is true, it’s a serious allegation. Do you have any proof?” Chabashira asked.
Ayanokoji’s gaze met hers with an unusual intensity. “We don’t have hard evidence, but the irregularities were clear. Tsukishiro’s interference is undeniable.”
Mashima-sensei folded his arms, frowning. “We’ll investigate this matter thoroughly. In the meantime, be cautious.”
I nodded, sensing the gravity of the situation. “Thank you, senseis.”
---
Later in the afternoon, I met Ichinose outside her classroom. She had returned to her cheerful self, rallying her class despite their loss in the exam. Ayanokoji stood beside me as we exchanged pleasantries.
“It’s almost winter vacation,” I said, trying to lighten the mood. “Hard to believe our first year is almost over.”
Ichinose’s smile was warm but tinged with exhaustion. “Yeah, we’ve come a long way, haven’t we?” She extended her hand. “Let’s promise to do our best next year too.”
I shook her hand firmly. “Deal.”
Ayanokoji nodded. “We’ll all keep pushing forward.”
As we talked, I noticed a brief flicker in Ichinose’s eyes as she glanced between me and Ayanokoji. The realization struck me like a silent revelation—she was jealous, I remembered in original story she had a crush on Ayanokoji and might have developed that feeling for him this time as well.
I deciding to keep that knowledge to myself for now, I smiled at her. “Let’s make next year even better.”
She brightened, the moment of envy hidden behind her usual cheer. “Yes, definitely.”
With goodbyes exchanged, Ayanokoji and I made our way back to our rooms. The winter chill in the air seemed less biting, softened by the determination that filled me. As I lay in bed that night, I reflected on the day. We had lost a battle, but the war was far from over.
With a sigh, I closed my eyes, resolved to help Ichinose with her unspoken feelings and ready for whatever challenges awaited us next.
