After returning from the trip, our class gathered in the homeroom, buzzing with anticipation. Chabashira-sensei entered with her usual stern expression but with a hint of satisfaction in her eyes.
“Congratulations,” she announced. “Class D has officially been promoted to Class C.”
Cheers erupted, and for the first time in a while, the classroom felt lighter, hopeful. I exchanged a quick glance with Ayanokoji, and we shared a subtle nod of acknowledgment. Progress was being made, but we knew it came with its own set of challenges.
---
Over the next few days, Yamauchi began to spend more time with Sakayanagi, raising eyebrows among our classmates. The chatter was endless: Why was he with her? I already knew what was happening. He was betraying the class, likely plotting something, and Ayanokoji and I were aware that it involved trying to expel Ayanokoji, just as in the original anime.
Meanwhile, Sakayanagi started spreading rumors about Ichinose, aiming to tarnish her reputation. I could see Ichinose’s usual warm smile hiding the pain she was feeling inside. It pained me to watch, but she always said, “I’m fine, really.” Yet, I knew better.
One evening, I discussed it with Ayanokoji. “We can’t let this continue. Ichinose is suffering, even if she won’t admit it,” I said, frustration clear in my voice.
Ayanokoji nodded, his eyes calculating. “We’ll need to intervene at the right moment.”
---
A few days later, as I, Ayanokoji, Haruka, and Yukimura were discussing strategies to improve our grades, noise erupted from Class B’s room. We rushed over and found Hashimoto confronting Ichinose, a sly grin on his face.
“So, Ichinose, is it true you shoplifted once?” he asked loudly, making the room tense.
Ichinose’s expression faltered, and the room fell silent as Sakayanagi walked in, Masumi at her side. “Well, Ichinose, do enlighten us,” Sakayanagi added smoothly, making the pressure unbearable.
Finally, Ichinose took a deep breath and, with tears streaming down her face, admitted, “Yes... I did. It’s true.” And started telling her backstory similar to anime and by the end she became really emotional remembering all of it.
Her classmates rushed to her side, offering words of comfort and support. “It doesn’t matter, Ichinose! We’re with you!” one of them said, and others echoed similar sentiments.
Sakayanagi smirked and walked out with her followers, satisfied. I clenched my fists, anger boiling beneath the surface, but Ayanokoji placed a hand on my shoulder, a silent reminder to stay composed. We left the scene with Haruka and Yukimura, giving Ichinose the space she needed.
---
The next day, Ichinose didn’t come to school. Saying that she was “sick,” but I knew better—she was devastated. That evening, Ayanokoji and I decided to visit her. After some convincing, she reluctantly let us into her room. The usually bright and welcoming space felt dark and suffocating.
Ichinose sat on her bed, looking downcast. “Why are you here?” she whispered, avoiding eye contact. “I’m sure everyone hates me now.”
I stepped forward, kneeling beside her. “You’re wrong, Ichinose. Your classmates stood by you yesterday. They don’t see you as guilty. They trust you and they need to be strong so that you support them and help them grow in future.”
Tears welled up in her eyes. “But... I disappointed them.”
I gently hugged her, feeling her shoulders shake as she cried. “You didn’t. You’re human, Ichinose, and we all have pasts we’re not proud of. What matters is what you do now. Your friends love you, and they want you to stay strong.”
Ayanokoji, who had been watching quietly, reached out and lightly ran his hand through her hair, a rare show of comfort. “He’s right. You’re not alone.”
After a moment, she calmed down and pulled back, wiping her tears. “Why... why are you helping me? We’re rivals, aren’t we?”
I smiled. “ Before rivals we’re friends, right? And friends look out for each other.”
She smiled weakly, eyes still shimmering with emotion. “Thank you... both of you.”
With that, we stood up and said our goodbyes, leaving her to rest and regain her strength. As we walked back, the weight of the day settled in, but there was a sense of relief knowing we had helped.
---
Later that night, as I lay in bed, I replayed the events of the day in my mind, a small smile crossing my face. Helping Ichinose had brought a sense of fulfillment because she was a character in classroom of elite series I used to admire after Horikita and Ayanokoji, and with that thought I drifted off to sleep, ready for whatever challenges lay ahead.
