The day after our intense study session with the group, I decided to spend some time alone to clear my head and get in some personal study time. The library was the perfect escape—quiet, with rows upon rows of books to explore. I walked through the aisles, browsing for something interesting to read. Finally, I spotted a book that looked promising, and as I reached out to grab it, another hand reached for the exact same book.
Surprised, I looked over and saw a girl with long silver hair and calm, gentle eyes. It was Hiyori Shiina from Class C. Her presence was calming, and she had this quiet, serene look about her. I’d seen her around before but had never really spoken to her.
“Oh, sorry about that!” I said, pulling my hand back, a little embarrassed.
She smiled softly, her voice just as gentle as her appearance. “No worries. I didn’t mean to startle you. You can take it.”
“No, it’s alright. I can find something else,” I replied, returning her smile.
She shook her head. “Actually, I’m happy to share if you’re interested. Are you a fan of this author too?”
I nodded, genuinely surprised. “Yeah, I am! Didn’t know anyone else in Class C liked them, though.”
Hiyori chuckled lightly. “I guess I’m full of surprises, then.”
We started talking, and it didn’t take long before we fell into an easy conversation. Hiyori had a deep love for books, and I found it refreshing to chat about something other than schoolwork or the endless competition between classes.
As we sat down together at a table, Hiyori placed the book between us. "So, what do you like most about this author?” she asked, looking genuinely curious.
“They have this way of bringing out the smallest details in a scene,” I replied, flipping through a few pages. “Every time I read their work, it feels like I’m right there, living in that world. It’s… comforting.”
Her eyes lit up. “Exactly! It’s like they understand life in such a simple but profound way. Sometimes, it feels like I’m learning something new about myself with each book.”
Our conversation flowed naturally, and soon enough, we began discussing our favorite genres, authors, and even books that had moved us. I hadn’t expected to make a friend so quickly, especially from Class C, but Hiyori was easygoing and kind, and it felt like we’d known each other much longer.
We were deep into discussing a novel’s ending when I noticed a familiar figure walking towards us—it was Ayanokoji.
“Hey, Ayanokoji!” I called out, waving him over.
He nodded, approaching our table. “What are you two up to?”
“Just discussing books,” I replied with a grin. “Wanna join us?”
Hiyori smiled at him and gestured to a nearby chair. “You’re welcome to study with us if you’d like.”
Ayanokoji gave a slight nod, accepting the invitation, and took a seat. As we settled into studying, Hiyori began talking about things happening in her own class. She mentioned it casually, but I could tell there was more to it.
“Have you heard about Manabe and her friends?” she asked, looking between Ayanokoji and me.
We exchanged a quick glance, both of us feigning innocence. “What about them?” I asked, trying to sound casual.
Hiyori sighed softly. “Well, there’s been a lot of tension in Class C since the cruise incident. Manabe and her friends… they’ve been acting strange lately. It seems like they have been leaking information to Class D because they were blackmailed by a video in which they were bullying Kei Karuizawa from Class D.”
I felt a chill run down my spine, but I kept my expression steady. Ayanokoji was unreadable, as always.
“Who is the person who have been blackmailing them?” I asked, feigning surprise.
“It’s not clear yet,” she replied thoughtfully. “But I heard Ryuen talking about it. He’s been trying to figure out who this ‘Mastermind’ is. He suspects that someone in Class D might be pulling the strings.”
Ayanokoji raised an eyebrow. “Interesting theory. Who does he think it is?”
Hiyori hesitated, lowering her voice as if she didn’t want anyone else to hear. “Ryuen thinks it might be Koenji or Hirata. They’re smart and have been very active in helping Class D and can manipulate the class, so they make logical suspects. But… I don’t think it’s them.”
“Why not?” I asked, genuinely curious.
She smiled gently, shaking her head. “It just doesn’t fit. They don’t seem like the type to manipulate people from the shadows. And… I don’t know, I trust my gut on this.”
I forced a laugh, trying to brush off the topic. “I think you’re overthinking it. Our class has had its own fair share of problems, and maybe it’s just a coincidence.”
Ayanokoji, beside me, nodded in agreement. “There are always rumors going around. It’s best not to get too involved.”
Hiyori looked at us thoughtfully before smiling warmly. “You’re probably right. I suppose it’s easy to get swept up in all the drama.”
With that, we shifted our focus back to studying. As the minutes passed, the tension in my chest started to ease. Hiyori’s presence was calming, and I found myself genuinely enjoying our time together. The three of us studied for a while longer, helping each other with various questions and even sharing a few laughs.
When the session ended, Hiyori packed up her things and gave us a warm smile. “This was fun. We should do it again sometime.”
“Definitely,” I replied, returning her smile. “It was nice studying with you.”
Ayanokoji gave her a polite nod. “Thanks for inviting me to join.”
We waved goodbye to Hiyori as she headed back to her dorm. Once she was out of sight, I glanced at Ayanokoji, a hint of tension returning.
“She’s nice,” I said quietly as we started walking together down the hallway.
“Yeah, she is,” he replied, keeping his usual calm demeanor.
We walked in silence for a moment before I spoke up again, my voice low. “So… the Mastermind they’re looking for. That’s us, isn’t it?”
Ayanokoji’s gaze didn’t waver. “Yes. And Ryuen isn’t going to stop until he finds out who it is.”
I nodded, feeling a bit of unease. “But he suspects Koenji and Hirata, right? Do you think we’re safe for now?”
He gave me a brief look, calculating as ever. “For now, yes. But we need to stay vigilant. Ryuen is determined, and he won’t rest until who is the real Mastermind.”
I took a deep breath, nodding in agreement. “Right. I’ll keep my guard up.”
He nodded back, his tone serious. “If anything happens, just act like you don’t know anything. The less involved you seem, the better.”
“Got it,” I replied, feeling a mix of relief and determination.
As we reached the dorms, Ayanokoji turned to me with a slight smirk. “By the way… you handled Hiyori pretty well. You might become a decent actor.”
I chuckled. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
With a final nod, we said our goodbyes and headed to our rooms. Lying in bed that night, I thought about the events of the day. Meeting Hiyori had been an unexpected surprise, and I was glad to have another friend, even if she came from a rival class. I just hoped that our secret would remain hidden and that Ryuen wouldn’t get too close to the truth.
With a deep breath, I closed my eyes, letting sleep take over as I felt a sense of accomplishment—and caution—settling within me.
