As the apartment grew silent, with only the whisper of the wind through the curtains breaking the stillness, Anuj and Anupamaa found themselves alone. Everyone had left, trusting Anuj to be there for her, as he always had been. Anupamaa clung to his hands with a desperation that spoke of fear, as if releasing her hold would mean losing him forever. Her fingers trembled, and her grip was so tight that it almost hurt. Yet, Anuj's heart swelled with an ache he couldn't quite express.
Gently, he uncurled her fingers from his, whispering softly, "I'm not going anywhere, Anupamaa." His words hung tenderly in the air, a soothing promise. Reluctantly, she let him go, her eyes following his every movement as he stood and walked to the nearby table, where Anurag had left the medications. He carefully picked up the prescribed tablets, each motion thoughtful and measured, and headed to the kitchen to get some water.
Anupamaa's gaze never left him, her heart beating faster in his absence, even if it was only for a moment. He soon returned, carrying a glass of water, his footsteps soft but steady. Kneeling beside her bed, he handed her the glass, a look of quiet concern etched into his features. "Here," he said, his voice low and gentle. "Let's get you feeling better."
She attempted to take the glass, but her hands betrayed her. They shook, and before she could steady them, the glass slipped from her fingers, shattering into shards that scattered across the floor. The sound startled them both, echoing in the heavy quiet of the room.
Anupamaa's eyes widened with distress, tears pricking at the corners as she stammered, "I-I'm so sorry, Anuj... I didn't mean to—"
But before she could spiral into self-blame, Anuj reached out, his touch warm and calming, cupping her face gently. His thumbs brushed away the tears that had begun to fall, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that melted her fears. "Shhh," he whispered, his breath mingling with hers in the small space between them. "It's just a glass, Anupamaa. You matter more than anything else. Always."
He leaned closer, their foreheads nearly touching, and for a moment, it was as if time itself held its breath. Anupamaa closed her eyes, feeling the gentle comfort radiating from him, his presence grounding her in a way nothing else could. The shattered glass on the floor became insignificant, mere fragments compared to the unbreakable bond between them.
Anuj shifted slightly, wrapping an arm around her, cradling her with a tenderness that spoke of unspoken promises. "You've carried so much alone," he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. "Let me take care of you, just for now. You don't have to be strong all the time."
She leaned into his embrace, her tension slowly dissolving. For the first time in what felt like forever, she allowed herself to be vulnerable, to accept the comfort he offered, and to rest, knowing that he was there—her unwavering protector, her steadfast companion.
Anupamaa's eyes widened again with panic as she saw glass shattered, the pieces scattering across the floor like tiny, glittering stars. "Suri, suri, suri... Anuj!" she exclaimed, guilt etched across her face. She instinctively tried to get up, her legs shifting to the side of the bed. "mei sab kuch saaf kardungi... Please, I'm so suri, Anuj... ," she pleaded, attempting to stand.
But before she could move, Anuj was beside her, his hands gently but firmly gripping her shoulders, guiding her back to sit down. "Arey, arey, Anu... ruk jao, baito," he insisted, his voice gentle yet unwavering. He bent down slightly, his dark eyes locking with hers, and his hands remained on her shoulders, grounding her.
Anupamaa frowned, worry shadowing her delicate features. "But Anuj... someone could get hurt. What if you step on the glass?" Her eyes flitted toward the floor anxiously, and she began to rise again, but Anuj's hands only pressed a bit more firmly to keep her in place.
