Maddy Perez stood in front of her locker, carefully reapplying her signature glossy lips while watching Nate Jacobs walk past with his new girlfriend through the reflection. Her perfectly manicured nails gripped the lip gloss tube a little tighter, but her face remained impassive. She'd learned long ago never to let them see you sweat.

"You know, you're way too good for him anyway," came a familiar voice from behind her. She didn't need to turn around to know it was Y/N, Nate's supposed best friend who had been giving her those soft, lingering looks since freshman year. Before, she'd never paid him much attention – she'd been too caught up in Nate's orbit. But now...

A plan started forming in her mind as she finally turned to face him. Y/N was leaning against the lockers, hands tucked into the pockets of his letterman jacket, (y/h/c) hair slightly tousled from practice. He wasn't as overtly intimidating as Nate, but there was something undeniably attractive about the way he carried himself – confident but not cocky, strong but not threatening.

"You're right," Maddy said, closing her locker with a decisive click. "I am too good for him." She tilted her head, studying Y/N with new interest. "Want to get coffee after school?"

The surprise on his face was almost cute. "For real?"

"Unless you're scared of what Nate might think," she challenged, one perfectly shaped eyebrow raised.

"I couldn't care less what Nate thinks," Y/N replied, and something in his steady gaze told Maddy he meant it.

That afternoon at the local coffee shop, Maddy was surprised to find herself actually enjoying Y/N's company. He listened when she talked – really listened, not just waited for his turn to speak. When she mentioned offhand that she was cold, he immediately shrugged off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders. The gesture was so natural, so lacking in the dramatic flair Nate would have given it, that it caught her off guard.

"You don't have to be nice to me just because of what happened with Nate," she said, fingers playing with the sleeve of his jacket.

"I'm not being nice because of Nate," Y/N replied simply. "I'm being nice because you deserve people being nice to you, Maddy."

Something fluttered in her chest, but she pushed it down. This was about making Nate jealous, nothing more. Yet as the days passed, she found herself looking forward to the moments she spent with Y/N – their morning coffee runs, the way he'd walk her to class, how he'd text her funny memes at midnight just because he saw something that made him think of her.

A week into their... whatever this was, they were sitting on the bleachers after school. Y/N was helping her study for their upcoming Spanish test, though they'd spent more time laughing at his terrible pronunciation than actually studying.

"Okay, okay," he said, running a hand through his hair in mock frustration. "How do you say 'You're beautiful' in Spanish?"

"Eres hermosa," Maddy replied automatically, then caught the way he was looking at her – like she was something precious, something worth protecting but not something that needed protecting.

"Eres hermosa, Maddy," he repeated softly, and for once, her heart wasn't thinking about Nate at all.

She saw Nate watching them sometimes in the hallways, his jaw clenched, but it didn't give her the satisfaction she'd expected. Instead, she found herself more focused on the way Y/N's hand felt in hers, how he'd absentmindedly play with her fingers while they talked, the way he remembered her coffee order and brought her favourite snacks when she was having a bad day.
