The mountain air was crisp and clean as Mandalay stood at the edge of the Pussycats' compound, her red costume catching the early morning sunlight. Her eyes were closed as she used her Search quirk, reaching out to locate any hikers who might need assistance in the surrounding wilderness. A smile tugged at her lips as she detected a familiar presence approaching – one that always made her heart skip a beat.
"I know you're there, Y/N," she called out, opening her eyes to see her boyfriend emerging from the treeline, his hero costume slightly dusty from patrol. "You can't sneak up on someone with a tracking quirk, you know."
Y/N grinned, his green eyes twinkling with mischief. "Can't blame a guy for trying, Shino." He moved closer, his form shifting slightly – a subtle reminder of his Beast Morph quirk that allowed him to take on animal characteristics at will. "Besides, I wasn't trying to sneak. Just admiring the view."
Mandalay felt a blush creep across her cheeks, thankful that her hair concealed most of it. "Flirt," she accused playfully. "How was your patrol?"
"Pretty quiet," Y/N replied, coming to stand beside her. His costume, designed to accommodate his various transformations, was a sleek black and dark green ensemble that complemented her red. "Helped a lost hiker find their way back to the trail. Used my owl eyes to spot them in the dark."
Mandalay nodded approvingly. "Your quirk really is perfect for rescue work. I'm glad the Pussycats convinced you to join our territory rotation."
"Best decision I ever made," Y/N said softly, taking her hand. "For more reasons than one."
Their relationship had started six months ago, after Y/N had begun assisting the Pussycats with mountain rescues. His Beast Morph quirk complemented their team perfectly – he could track like a wolf, fly like an eagle, and had the strength of a gorilla when needed. But it was his kind heart and unwavering dedication to helping others that had truly caught Mandalay's attention.
"The others should be waking up soon," Mandalay said, glancing back at the compound. "Want to join us for breakfast? Pixie-Bob's cooking."
Y/N's face lit up. "You know I never pass up Ryuko's cooking. But first..." He tugged gently on her hand, pulling her closer. "I'd like a moment alone with my favourite cat."
Mandalay rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress her smile. "You're impossible, you know that?"
"Impossibly charming?" he suggested, wrapping an arm around her waist.
"Impossibly something," she retorted, but leaned into his embrace nonetheless.
They stood in comfortable silence for a moment, watching the sun climb higher over the mountains. Mandalay found herself reflecting on how much her life had changed since Y/N had entered it. As the rational, level-headed member of the Pussycats, she'd always focused on the mission, on being the voice of reason. But Y/N had shown her that being professional didn't mean she couldn't also open her heart.
A commotion from the compound drew their attention – it sounded like Pixie-Bob had started breakfast preparations, judging by the clanging of pots and pans.
"We should head in," Mandalay said reluctantly. "Before Ragdoll comes looking for us."
Y/N nodded but didn't release her just yet. "One thing first." He shifted slightly, and suddenly his ears became more pointed, taking on a feline appearance. Mandalay couldn't help but laugh.
"Really? Cat ears?"
"Well, I have to fit in with the team, don't I?" he said with a wink. "Besides, I know you think it's cute."
