Lan Wangji was immersed in his work, typing on his laptop when his phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, seeing Jingyi’s name flash across it. Letting out a small sigh, he picked up the call, assuming it was another routine update.

“Sir,” Jingyi’s voice came through, hesitating slightly, “there’s been an incident.”

Wangji’s brows furrowed as he listened to Jingyi’s recount of what had happened at the reception. The moment he heard the words “insulted” and “crying,” his hands clenched into fists, his blood boiling with anger.

How dare someone insult his Wei Ying?

It was Wei Ying’s first time stepping into his company, and this was the welcome he received? The idea that his precious Wei Ying had been reduced to tears because of the sheer audacity and incompetence of a mere receptionist was unacceptable.

Lan Wangji stood up abruptly, the chair scraping against the floor. Without another word, he ended the call and grabbed his coat. His jaw was set, and his eyes were stormy as he made his way out of his office.

Wei Ying was his priority, and he would not tolerate anyone mistreating him. Someone was about to learn just how dangerous it was to cross Lan Wangji.

Lan Wangji stepped into the VIP waiting room, his gaze immediately falling on the scene that shattered his heart into pieces. Wei Ying, who was usually so vibrant and full of life, now sat hunched over, his face streaked with tears, his sobs soft but heart-wrenching.

Lan Jingyi approached his boss quickly and recounted the incident again, detailing the receptionist’s rude behavior and Wei Ying’s uncontrollable tears. Lan Wangji listened in silence, his jaw tightening with every word. He didn’t need any further explanation; his sole focus now was the trembling boy before him.

He walked over and knelt beside Wei Ying, his voice soft and soothing as he spoke. “Wei Ying, look at me.”

Hearing the familiar voice, Wei Ying lifted his tear-streaked face, his red eyes meeting Lan Wangji’s. The sight tugged at Wangji’s heart, but he forced himself to remain composed. Wei Ying, despite his tear-streaked face, looked endearingly vulnerable.

“I’m sorry, bun,” Wangji murmured, his tone laced with genuine regret. He hesitated briefly before reaching out to gently wipe away the tears on Wei Ying’s cheeks.

The younger boy, overwhelmed with emotions and comforted by Wangji’s presence, instinctively leaned forward and wrapped his arms around Lan Wangji’s neck in a tight hug.

Lan Wangji froze for a moment, startled by the sudden embrace. But as Wei Ying’s sobs softened against his shoulder, he quickly relaxed and wrapped his arms around the boy, holding him securely. He began rubbing slow, soothing circles on Wei Ying’s back, murmuring softly, “It’s okay now. I’m here.”

This was the first time they had hugged, and the warmth of Wei Ying’s trust filled Wangji with a strange but welcome sense of contentment.

As Wei Ying’s breathing evened out, Lan Wangji realized the boy had fallen asleep in his arms, his exhaustion finally overtaking him. Wangji gazed at him for a moment, his expression softening further. He shifted slightly and carefully lifted Wei Ying into his arms, cradling him protectively.

Turning to the driver, Ken, Wangji said in a calm and polite tone, “You can leave now. I’ll take care of him and drop him home myself. Please don’t inform his family—I’ll do that myself.”

Ken nodded hesitantly but trusted Wangji’s words. Jingyi escorted him out to the parking lot while Lan Wangji carried Wei Ying toward the elevator. His steps were steady and purposeful as he headed to his cabin, determined to ensure that Wei Ying would feel safe and comfortable in his care.

Lan Wangji entered his office quietly, ensuring not to disturb the sleeping boy in his arms. He approached the large couch and gently placed Wei Ying down, careful not to wake him. As he removed Wei Ying’s shoes and set them aside, his movements were deliberate and tender.

Opening the cupboard in his office, Wangji retrieved a soft blanket—one he kept for the long nights spent working. He draped it over Wei Ying, tucking him in snugly. His gaze softened as he took in the younger’s sleeping form. The puffiness of Wei Ying’s face from crying made him look impossibly endearing, and a small smile crept onto Lan Wangji’s usually stoic face.

Unable to resist, he reached out and gently caressed Wei Ying’s cheek, his touch feather-light. Leaning forward, he placed a tender kiss on Wei Ying’s forehead, as though silently promising to protect him from all harm.

A knock on the door disrupted the quiet moment. Lan Wangji straightened, his composure returning. “Come in,” he called softly.

Lan Jingyi stepped in, his expression a mix of worry and curiosity. “Sir?”

Lan Wangji nodded toward the couch where Wei Ying lay. “Stay here with Wei Ying. Make sure he’s comfortable. If he wakes up, inform me immediately and take care of him.” His tone was calm but carried an edge of authority.

“Yes, sir. I’ll take care of him,” Jingyi replied earnestly.

Without another word, Lan Wangji strode out of the room, his posture rigid and determined. His eyes glinted with a rare intensity as he pulled out his phone and made a call. The conversation was brief, and when he ended it, a devilish smirk tugged at the corners of his lips.

It was time to deal with the insolent receptionist personally.
